Everything That Happened During the First Week in Our New Home

Although we got the keys on the 2nd November, we didn't actually move into the house until 8th November, so we've (nearly) been living here, properly, for a week now - how quickly has that gone?! After that length of time, I feel more settled in now and the strange feeling of waking up and wondering where I am has now gone, haha.

It still is a bit surreal, waking up in a house that we own. But it's been a very weird and wonderful time since picking the keys up and I thought I'd let you know what's happened and what life has been like over the last week living in our new home.

We spent the 2nd-7th November cleaning the place first, getting it up to a standard we're happy with before moving all of our things in. We actually booked the 8th-12th off work so we could get everything sorted and be settled and established ready for life in our new place.

Monday 8th November

The 8th was hectic! We booked a van to take all of our things over and we had so much help with it all. We even managed to put the bed up and make it up ready for a long night's sleep. I also unboxed the entire contents of the kitchen which I was happy about, so at least one room was in some kind of order by the time the day was up.

Another thing we manage to do was plumb the new washing machine in. I have been so excited to use this machine that I've been making any excuse to put items of clothing in the laundry basket, just waiting for a decent load to generate before I can use the machine, haha. I just LOVE new white goods, there's something lovely and clean about them.

Tuesday 9th November

The 9th was a little less stressful. We had a technician from Sky come out to set up the wi-fi and that was it really, so we were up quite early to let that chappy in. Then we watching Home Alone with some coffee and crumpets, followed by some Couples Come Dine with Me and a spot of lunch.

By the time that was done, we measured up for some new doors and picked out some door handles we liked ready for the transition. You'll have to wait and see which doors we chose, I'll be sure to do a follow-on blog post about that.

Right now, the living room doesn't have a door and neither does the kitchen, which we were surprised about. There are two more doors downstairs - the loo and the cupboard under the stairs, but both are old and drab so we'll be replacing those too. Let me know what your experience has been with fitting new doors, how did you find it? We also did a pretty big food shop ready for the week ahead.

Wednesday 10th November

Wednesday was spent doing a mixture of different things. One of them being unpacking some of the home office stuff. We managed to get everything unboxed, desks put back up and shelving units filled all ready for the start of another working week. We didn't want the study to be left in disarray for too long. That took most of the day but it was all worth it as it now looks like a lovely, usable space again. BUT we did catch up on The Great British Bake Off from Tuesday night - poor Lizzie :(

Thursday 11th November

We were up earlier today lubricated and refitting the front door handle as it was a little stiff. After that, we went to Dunelm, B&Q and Sainsbury's for a few bits and bobs. On our trip, we bought: hand towel holders, loo roll holders, a Christmas gnome, a Christmas gnome doormat, a Venetian blind, a large clock, a paint sample, a tea towel rail, some juice, Starbucks hot chocolate powder, sourdough bread, some crisps and some Flash floor wipes - exciting, haha.

When we came home, we put the paint sample up on the wall, hung the clock, fitted the blinds and put the tea towel rail up in the kitchen. Tom also ripped out an old wood shelf in the pantry-style cupboard in the kitchen as it was getting in the way of what we wanted to put in there. Tom's parents then came round to drop off some pictures they were hanging onto for us and we had some chilli con carne for dinner - all in a day's work!

Friday 12th November

Friday we had another early-ish start. We needed to go to the Post Office to pick up a parcel and then we went back to Dunelm for some more blinds, but this time, for the kitchen. We opted for two silver aluminium ones as there are, of course, two windows in the kitchen. We did have a choice of colours, but thought silver was better :) We then paid a trip to Home Bargains for some cleaning supplies, followed by Homebase for a saw and a padlock - exciting.

We had spaghetti bolognese for dinner with a bit of garlic bread and that was about it. Tom put the blinds up in the kitchen, so that room looks great now and I know feel like everything is coming together, slowly. We have a few more jobs left to do before we start painting and decorating, but it'll all be worth the wait.

Once we start renovating rooms, I'll take you along for the ride with me - promise! After dinner, we tidied up the house and did some more unboxing and unpacking and then headed over to see some family for the evening, which was lovely.

Saturday 13th November

We were up bright and early again on Saturday as we managed to hang a new living room door - success! Neither the living room or the kitchen had a door on it and we felt like they needed one on it, so we chose a cottage-style door for each opening together with some modern chrome and brushed metal handles. We'll fit the kitchen door at a later date. Tom's family came round to give us a hand with them and we all stopped for lunch, having sausage sandwiches to fill up our tummies :)

We were fitting the living door until well into the evening, even stopping to have some dinner (we had fajitas with Tom's parents). I've started burning a few candles now as well which really adds a homely, warm and cosy feel to the place. My favourite one right now is 'Sweet Honeycomb' by Yankee Candle - delicious!
