Everything You Need to Know About My Accent Wall

Copy

What colour is it painted?

The accent wall itself is painted in Dulux Indigo Shade. I must stress that it's quite expensive to buy as you have to purchase it in a tin and you don't get as much in it as the normal tubs of paint that Dulux do. If you don't want to fork out the extra cash on Indigo Shade, then Sapphire Salute is quite similar, but it's more purple in tone rather than navy, which Indigo Shade is (although you'd think it would be the other way around, haha).

Which other colour did you use to create a contrast?

The colour we went for on all of the other walls was Dulux Jasmine White. We wanted a really light colour that wasn't white or beige, and this was the perfect shade. It's evidently not white but it's also not beige, it's just the right shade to perfectly contrast the dark wall, whilst still making the living room feel spacious and cosy all at the same time.

What is your wooden beam made from?

Our wooden beam is made from oak. It wasn't the cheapest fire surround on the market, but it's strong and sturdy. It needs to be solid in order to withstand the heat that comes off the log burner during the winter. Pine was way too soft and would warp quickly, where as oak is very hard-wearing and this has been treated.

Where can I buy the mirror above the fireplace?

The mirror is from IKEA, of all places. You should still be able to buy it, but we've had this for a good three years or so now, so the mirror shape and design might be the same, but the colour of the wood might be slightly different. I'll try and find it online and link it below for you. If not the exact one, it'll be something similar.

Did you install the log burner?

No, we didn't install the log burner. It was there when we bought the house. We were originally going to get rid of it and replace it for a gas one, but as the energy bills started to rise and the cost of doing the house up started to become a bit out of hand, we opted to keep it and we're so glad that we did!

Did you move the vertical radiator onto the accent wall or was it already there?

We moved the radiators as part of our living room renovation. There were very old, very heavy radiators that used to sit under the window and on the wall where the television now sits. We took those off and moved the radiators, opting to change them for vertical ones in the process.

We didn't know where we wanted them, initially, but because they were pure white and looked amazing, we thought we'd have them on the accent wall, as we knew we wanted to paint it a dark colour. We thought the white radiator would perfectly contrast the dark blue, together with the white skirting boards, architraves, coving and door. So in short, no, it wasn't there when we moved in.

Take a look at this blog post here to get more of an idea of what our living room looked like when we first moved in. Also, if you would like to know what we think to our vertical radiators, including their price, their efficiency and more, then check out this blog post :)

How did you make use of the alcove at the end of the wall?

We didn't know what we wanted to do with that corner of the room. It wasn't until I looked online and saw that this ladder shelf trend had started that we decided we should put a ladder shelf in there. It fits perfectly and styling it initially was so much fun.
