5 Dos & 5 Don'ts of Visiting Rome
When in Rome, do as the Romans do, and make sure you avoid some things as well! In this blog post, I'm going to be giving you a few dos and don'ts of visiting Rome, whether it's your first time or not. Not only can this help to save both time and money, but it also allows you to embrace the culture and maybe learn a few things along the way.
5 dos of visiting Rome
- DO schedule experiences - make sure you prebook as many experiences as possible before you go. This enables you to skip some queues and avoid the crowds. It also helps to give you a solid itinerary so you don't waste a single second of your time in Rome
- DO take a sip from the fountains - I know, they look old and unclean, but the water flowing from them is actually exceptionally sanitary. Known as Nasoni fountains, the water flowing from them is clean, fresh and free. Don't waste money buying bottled water when you can get it from the streets of Rome instead
- DO eat when the Romans do - while you might have lunch at midday and dinner at 5pm, the Romans won't have their lunch until about 1:30pm and their dinner at around 8pm. For the most bustling, authentic Roman eating experience, choose to book your tables at those times
- DO be vigilant - watch your valuables at all times when in Rome, whether it be while you're eating dinner or mooching around the Sistine Chapel. There will always be thieves and pickpockets about, so watch your stuff and be aware of your surroundings
- DO use the metro - don't be afraid of their metro system. It's cheap, fast and convenient, with stops now going all the way out to the Colosseum. You don't have to rely on expensive taxis, or use your trotters to walk around all day and night
5 don'ts of visiting Rome
- DON'T be afraid to say 'no' - you're going to get a lot of people coming up to you on the street asking you to come into their restaurant or to buy things from them; you're well entitled to say so 'no'. You don't have to appease them, just say 'no' and move on
- DON'T try and flag down a taxi - taxis will not stop for random people on the street. They need to be prebooked or hired at designated taxi stands around the city. If you try and flag one down, you'll be wasting your time and you'll let everyone know that you are, in fact, a tourist
- DON'T eat overlooking major monuments - not only will these establishments massively overcharge you, but they can also be substandard quality all round, from the food itself to the waiter service. It also opens you up to pickpockets and other scammers. Take a short stroll around the corner and you'll happen across some gorgeous restaurants offering up delicious grub
- DON'T paddle in fountains - as inviting as it might be on a hot Roman day, don't be tempted to paddle or swim in water fountains, especially the Trevi Fountain. You aren't even allowed to sit on the Trevi Fountain, let alone take a dip in it
- DON'T wear exposing clothing - no matter how hot, make sure you're wearing clothes that are modest. They need to cover shoulders and knees. Being a Catholic part of the world, a lo of churches require modest dress in order for you to enter them, especially at the Vatican. To avoid disappointment, always wear modest clothing if you want to tour the churches and chapels
