Now I've reached my thirties, it seems that grey hairs have come out in force, and I don't mean just one or two. There could be as much as five or six long wiry grey hairs that regularly make an appearance. No matter how many times I pull them out, they come back with a vengeance.
I'm not one to dye my hair. Never have, never will. So I went on the lookout for something that had colouring properties, without actually going the full hog and dyeing it from root to tip. My mother-in-law uses this and her grey hairs have gone from white or grey to a light blonde colour after regularly using this shampoo and conditioner.
I have been using it for around six weeks now in the hope that it would start to cover up my greys. I thought that six weeks of continuous use was enough time to write a review for it, so here are my thoughts six weeks in.
John Frieda Midnight Brunette Colour Deepening Shampoo & Conditioner - a review
Application
I take off all my rings and other pieces of jewellery before using this shampoo and conditioner, mainly because it has a colouring agent in it. I start off with the shampoo, which is quite thin and not easy to lather up. I have quite thick hair and it's shoulder-length. It means that I often have to use more than necessary to get right down to the scalp.
It takes a while to get a good lather going, which is something that puts me off initially. It becomes more of a chore than using other regular shampoos that aren't colouring or darkening. However, once it's in and lathered, it's easy to work with. The conditioner behaves just like any other conditioner you would find on the market. The only difference is its colour, really.
Washing out
Washing the shampoo and conditioner out is straightforward enough. It's just like rinsing out other types of shampoo and conditioner, basically. The only thing I would say is to make sure that it's completely washed away with clean water.
The colouring agent in the shampoo and in the suds could cause discolouring of silicone sealant, shower trays, tile grout or even bath tubs in general. As soon as you're convinced everything is washed away, then continue as you were. Also, if you towel-dry your hair, make sure to use an older one to prevent discolouring your towel. I haven't had this yet, but it's just a precaution, really.
Are there immediate results?
I can't say that I saw any immediate results with regards to colour deepening after using this shampoo and conditioner. I wasn't expecting any, to be honest. It does, however, leave your hair smelling really good. It makes your hair soft and smooth, tackling frizziness as well I thought, which isn't something it specifies on the tube.
So that was an added bonus. It's a really nice mid-range shampoo. If you were going to spend more on your hair care, then I'd recommend John Frieda based purely on the result this product provides. But it terms of colour difference, there wasn't any after the first use, which is to be expected.
What's my verdict on colour deepening after six weeks of use?
I genuinely think that there was a difference in the colour of my hair after six weeks of use. While it hasn't actually tinged the colour of my greys, as they're still very much grey, haha, it has intensified the colour of my hair overall. I'm hoping that with another six weeks of use, I'll see a colour difference in my grey hairs. I'm optimistic right now with regards to covering up my white hairs, but if you wanted to use it to intensify your general brunette locks, then I'd say it totally works.
