Decking Maintenance 101: Everything You Need to Know

Decking - it might seem like a really easy, low maintenance option when it comes to garden surfacing, but there's a lot more to its upkeep than you might have otherwise thought. In this blog post, I'll be telling you everything you need to know about how to maintain your wooden, painted or stained decking. So let's dive right in, just in time for the summer to get fully underway.

Regularly sweep it

Decking is always dusty. It gathers debris from around the garden, from flower petals and leaves to feathers and rogue soil. If you're wanting to keep your decking in top condition throughout the summer season, then sweeping it regularly will keep it in amazing condition for weeks on end.

Get yourself a soft brush or broom. You can find them in the home or laundry sections of most supermarkets and other shops like B&M or The Range. These soft brushes get the job done, but without stripping off your paint or stain.

Keep it clean

If you find that there's dust or a bit of dirt on your decking, then giving it a quick spritz with your garden hose, or sprinkling some water out of a watering can onto your decking, will help you to keep on top of that dust and dirt throughout the summer season. Keep on top of it, especially if you're wanting to spend most of your time outdoors during the hot weather.

Apply decking oil

Decking oil is available in a wide range of colours and transparencies. This means that you'll be able to paint your decking with the oil, or cover over your paint, preserving it through all weathers. It can be expensive, but you'll only need to apply it once every two years or so. It's a great way to, not only preserve the paint colour, but also to protect the wood.

Use furniture pads & avoid dragging

If you're going to be putting furniture on your decking, then put some pads on the feet of tables, chairs and sofas. Also, prevent dragging furniture around the decking. Not only can this take off your paint or stain, but it could also damage the decking boards themselves.
