8 Places Everyone Forgets to Clean (But Totally Should)
We all like to think that our homes are clean and tidy, and while they may look that way on the face of it, how clean are our houses, really? There are loads of nooks and crannies of our home that are present that we probably don't give a second thought about. Let me tell you a few things that you're likely forgetting to clean that you totally should.
1. Skirting boards
Present in every room in the house, skirting boards often go unloved and unnoticed. So something that largely blends into the background of our everyday life will, of course, become dusty and dirty, especially skirting boards where they come into contact with shoes, bags and other things as a result of increased traffic and wear. I go around and clean our skirting boards once a week. I take a damp cloth to them, let them air-dry and then I'll give them a hoover.
2. Dishwasher, fridge & washing machine
Dishwashers and washing machines can become incredibly dirty, whether it be food build-up or silt build-up, there's always something in those white goods that needs to be cleaned. I clean out our dishwasher, washing machine and fridge every four weeks or so for good measure.
3. Oven
Ovens often go untouched in between uses. I like to stay on top of our oven by wiping it out after each use. If, however, you don't do that, for whatever reason, then ovens can often go unnoticed and uncleaned. Trust me, it will make your life a lot easier in the long run if you clean your oven more regularly. It also helps to keep you safe as there's less of a chance of fire thanks to grease and oil build-up.
4. Remote controls
Remote controls, whether they be for the telly, the radio or even games consoles, are touched regularly by grubby hands. To keep everything in check and to make sure they're as clean and hygienic as possible, clean your remote controls with anti-bacterial wipes. I clean ours once a week.
5. Door handles
Much like remote controls, door handles are regularly touched by dirty hands and fingers, meaning bacteria can easily build-up. You should clean your door handles, both inside and out, to keep the dirt at bay. Not only will it make them look good, but it will also keep bacteria away.
6. Bins
This might sound like a silly one, but bins are extremely dirty vessels. They house expired foods and all sorts that contain harmful bacteria and even mould. You should be sure to clean your bin out regularly using disinfectant. Not only does this go for household waste bins, but your curb-side ones too.
7. Blinds
Blinds are looked at and used all the time, but somehow, they're something that we forget to clean. I like to use a feather duster to clean our blinds. It works a treat. Unlike most things in our house, I clean our blinds every two weeks to keep on top of it.
8. Extractor hood
Extractor hoods, much like blinds, are always seen and regularly used, so why do we forget to clean them? I clean ours, much like the fridge, washing machine and dishwasher, every four weeks or so. Sometimes I'll do it more often depending on how bad the grease build-up is. Not only does this protect the integrity of the hood, but it also keeps you safe from kitchen fires, as you're reducing the grease and oil present around the hob.
