What Should You Wear On a Long Haul Flight?

Long haul flights are both exciting and laborious. You know that you're going somewhere awesome, but it takes hours and hours to get there. I remember when we went to California for our honeymoon, it took us nearly twelve hours to fly to San Francisco. That was the longest flight I have been on so far.

But it gets you thinking about what to you should wear on these things. This is something I struggled with the first time I flew long haul. So it got me thinking that maybe a few other people could do with some pointers for what to wear on a long haul flight. Hopefully, you find this useful!

Wear something stretchy

Something stretchy and breathable is a great choice when it comes to clothing on a long haul flight. If you're not sure about wearing something stretchy, maybe because you're a little body-conscious, then maybe opt for clothing that's baggy. Basically, you need to make sure you're as comfortable as possible.

Bring layers

Planes can go from being hot to cold. Mostly, I find that they're often quite cold rather than warm. But anyway, I would suggest that you wear layers. This way, you can take garments off and put them on again as and when you need to. Don't choose to wear one jumper or a vest top. Bring a cardigan or a hoodie just in case.

Throw on some socks

Planes are dirty. More dirty than you might think. Usually, I wear trainers on a long haul flight. But sometimes, I'll wear sandals, like Birkenstocks. But even if I'm wearing Birks, I will make sure that I have a pair of socks in my carry on bag.

I can wear the socks if I decide to take my shoes off. Then I'll take the socks off again, pop my sandals back on and I'll make sure to wash the socks when I get home. Basically, as long as my bare feet aren't touching the floor, I'm all good.

Choose some comfortable footwear

Flying can make your feet swell. Don't choose shoes that you have to prize on and off with a shoe horn, for example. This is my I like to wear a pair of well worn-in trainers. Alternatively, I'll wear a pair of trusty Birkenstocks. This way, even if my feet do swell and I want to take my shoes off, I know that I'll be able to comfortably put my shoes back on again at the end of the flight.

Opt for some dark-coloured clothes

Like I've already said, planes are dirty places. That and you'll probably end up getting some food or drink spilt down you at some point. This is why I'll opt to wear black clothes over light-coloured garments. Any spillages or accidents won't show up or be as obvious. It's also better in case your seat isn't exactly clean. Even when we fly Premium Economy, the chairs can be riddled with crumbs...not great Virgin Atlantic!
