4 Reasons to Steer Clear of Wallpaper in Your Home

The picture above is a photo of our house before we bought it. It's the photo the estate agent took, so none of it is our stuff and it's no way the decor we would have chosen. While it might look ok, it was all wallpapered - even the ceiling. The laminate flooring was on a mixture of carpet underlay, some of which was really old and the rubber underlay had bugs living in it.

The plaster was crumbling and there wasn't just one layer of wallpaper on there. We took off six layers of wallpaper before we hit painted walls. It was atrocious. In fact, under the surface, this room was so badly damaged and neglected that it took us 9 solid months to get it back to a liveable condition. Not to mention the place stunk of dog and gas (because their 27-year-old boiler leaked, which has also now been replaced).

But this isn't a blog post about the horrendous condition the living room was in when we bought it. It's actually about my absolute hatred for wallpaper and why you just shouldn't bother with it in the first place. If you're tempted to cover your lovely plastered walls in sticky wallpaper mess, then this should help you to think twice before you lather up the paste. Here are x reasons why you should steer clear of wallpaper in your home:

1. It's an absolute nightmare to get off

Whether you're wanting a change or are leaving it for the next homeowner to take off, wallpaper is just a nightmare to remove. We uncovered six layers of wallpaper in our living room when we first bought our house, because the previously owners clearly couldn't be bothered taking it off, and I can see why. I would say to save yourself the trouble, should you change your mind in the future.

2. There's too much choice

You think it's difficult choosing paint colours...wait until you have to choose a wallpaper pattern or design. The choice you have is so overwhelming, so it might well take far longer to choose a wallpaper than it would for you to choose a wall paint.

3. It's messy

It's far more messy to put up wallpaper than it is to simply paint a wall the colour you want. It involves paste and all sorts. Getting a tin of paint, some dust sheets and a roller is far easier, cheaper and quicker if you're looking for an efficient job.

4. It takes time to put up

Going back to my point about efficiency and time, wallpaper takes a lot longer to put up and get right than painting an interior wall. This is especially the case if your wallpaper has a pattern than you need to follow and continue. Save yourself the hassle and just steer clear of wallpaper in your home.
