How to Prepare Your Decking for Painting
Decking can be an absolute pain in the are to look after. Especially if you've painted it rather than stained it. But whether you've gone down the staining or painting route, you're going to still need to give it a refresh every now and again. If you've never given your decking a fresh paint of coat before, then here are some tips for preparing the surface for a new coat of paint or stain:
Sweep away dirt & debris
First things first, you need to give it all a good sweep. Get rid of any dust, cobwebs, leaves and other things that might be on the surface. Not only does this ensure none of it goes in the new paint, but it also helps to protect windows and plant pots when you come to jet wash it, which is the next stage in the process.
Jet wash old paint away
Now time for the fun part - jet washing. This is a great way of removing things like bird poo, moss or algae and also for stripping off old paint, especially if it's peeling. Go along the grooves with the jet wash wand and let the machine do the rest.
Let it air dry
It's tempting to get repainting right away, but don't do this while the wood is wet. The paint just won't stick and it will come off a lot more quickly. The decking needs to be completely dry by the time you come to repaint it, so let it air dry for as long as it takes before repainting.
Get repainting
This is the most rewarding part of the whole thing - repainting. When the decking is dry, get painting, making sure to push the paint right into the grooves for good measure. Keep going and apply another coat if needed. Make sure you read the instructions on the paint tin before you start.
