4 Signs it's Time to Replace Your Wooden Chopping Boards
Chopping boards - they're simple but so important in the kitchen. That's why you need to make sure that you're using hygienic, clean and safe wooden chopping boards. So how do you know when it's time to replace them? Here are four signs it's time to replace your wooden chopping boards for safe food prep:
1. There are deep scratches
Wooden chopping boards are going to be soft, so the more you use them, the more scratched up they're going to get. The issue with deep scratches is that this creates crevices and gaps for bacteria and food to hide and deteriorate. If you notice that your wooden chopping boards have deep scratches in them, then it's time to get rid and buy some new ones.
2. Stains, mould or dark spots appearing
Stained, mouldy or dark spots on chopping boards signal issues. Not only is it unhygienic, but it's also unsafe. Wood, like wooden spoons, will harbour bacteria deep within the grain, so it's not always as simple as cleaning them and hoping for the best. If your wooden chopping boards are stained, mouldy or have black spots on them, then replace your wooden chopping boards as soon as possible.
3. Smells are lingering
Wooden chopping boards, as already said, can harbour stains, smells and some minor food particles. If your wooden chopping boards have lingering food smells, then it's time to replace them with some new, clean chopping boards.
4. It's warping, cracking or splintering
Wooden chopping boards will breakdown over time. Whether you're constantly submerging them in water to clean them or putting them in the dishwasher, it will cause wooden chopping boards to warp and crack, especially if they're made form material like bamboo. Not only does this make them harder to use, but it also provides more spaces for food and bacteria to sit, which is unsafe and unhygienic. So if it's starting to crack, warp or splinter, then go and get a new one!
