So, the time has come for you to walk down the aisle. But what do you need to know to make sure that the morning of your wedding goes off without a hitch...so you can get hitched? Haha. Well, I was reminiscing about our own wedding nearly two years ago, and it got me thinking how we managed to pull off such an amazing day. Well, the devil was in the detail and that detail came from the planning.
While you spend months wedding planning, deciding on dresses, food, venues, music etc, people often forget that the morning itself needs a lot of planning to make sure the bride (or groom) isn't running late. So, what did I do to make sure that the morning ran as smoothly as possible? Let me give you a few tips to help you:
1. Have a timeline planned out
The only thing I would say, to make sure that you're not late and also to ensure you aren't forgetting things, is to have a solid timeline planned out. That includes working backwards from the ceremony start time. That's what we did. We knew the ceremony started at one, so I worked back from there to know what time I should leave the house.
I left my parent's home at about 7am, went round to pick up my friend (bridesmaid) and then went to the venue where my makeup and hair artist was waiting for us. Hair and makeup started at 8am, so I knew that that's the latest I had to be there for. It's all a matter of planning and setting out a timeline so that everything goes as smoothly as possible.
2. Hang up the dresses as soon as possible
Your wedding dress, and the bridesmaids dresses, have likely been locked away in a zipped-up bag away from prying eyes for the last year or so. You'll have little to no opportunity to hang up those dresses on the run up to the wedding, so I recommend hanging them up so that the creases can drop out as soon as you arrive at the venue to get ready. You might be getting ready at home or at your parents' house.
But the same principle still applies. As soon as the groom has left, along with anyone else who hasn't seen your dress, then hang it up to make sure it's not creased by the time you come to put it on. Something I did was bring a steamer, just in case. Although I never actually needed to use it, it was good to have on hand just in case. Also, other people in my wedding party used it to get some creases out of shirts and dresses.
3. Make sure there's enough food on hand
When we got married, I ordered a breakfast platter for myself, my bridesmaids and my mum. It consisted of a few pastries and some fruit, which I preferred because it was nice and light, but also filling and hydrating. It also helps to put people at ease as the morning goes on. The other thing is that the wedding breakfast is often hours away at this point, so making sure everyone has eaten is crucial for their comfort really! It also helps to keep stress levels low, haha.
4. Don't overdo the prosecco
It can seem like a good idea to have a few glasses of prosecco with the girls on the morning of your wedding, but go easy. We had a bottle or two when we got married, but just a tipple across a few hours, AND we had some food to go with it.
The thing is, if you're intoxicated when you walk down the aisle, the officials can cancel it all as you aren't fit to commit to such a legally-important commitment. Don't go overboard because it could have devastating consequences. But feel free to enjoy a glass or two with your girls and other member of your wedding party, just don't get drunk, haha.
5. Designate someone to look after your phone for the day
A bride doesn't usually want to be carrying around their bits and bobs. I didn't have pockets and I didn't have a bag either. Instead, my mum and my sister looked after my stuff, and by "stuff" I mean my phone and my lippy. My sister looked after my lipstick and my mum looked after my phone. It was pre-arranged and took the pressure off of me. That and I always knew where my items were when I needed it.
6. Relax & enjoy it!
As much as it needs to be somewhat regimented, you should be enjoying getting ready on the morning of your wedding. So make sure you relax, take it all in and just have the best time ever with your wedding party. By the time the morning is over, you'll be ready to walk down the aisle - exciting!
