My GP Pain
This post is a little different to what you are usually used to, however, I have never been so infuriated by a so called 'professional' before, so much so, I want to share my some what uncomfortable experience with you guys!
About 2 months ago now, I went to my local GP with back pain, something I had been suffering from for a few months prior to my doctor visit, I wanted to be referred to a physio seeing as nothing else was working. I had seen a GP before who asked me to take Co-codamol, which is essentially a stronger form of pain killer (paracetamol and ibuprofen weren't relieving any pain), I said I would try it, but never did as I wanted to stay away from the medical route entirely considering I am only 18 and I do NOT want to be on medication forever! About 2 weeks later I went back to the doctors and saw a different "GP"...
Round One BING BING BING BING
I explained to her what was wrong with me, then I told her all about the Co-codamol predicament. Now, Co-codamol has many different side effects including drowsiness, constipation, nausea etc, so, it should have been evident to the "GP" why I didn't want to take it, or so I thought. She then asked me (for some stupid reason) why I didn't want to take the medicine, so I told her AGAIN, I am at college full time, sitting exams in the summer, so obviously I wanted the problem sorted, I didn't want painkillers to cover up the problem, something which I had tried to make clear to her at the very beginning, so she obviously wasn't listening. Not only did she then try to persuade me to take the pain killers, she also used very simple terms to describe the side effects (which I already knew by the way), such as "bunged up" instead of 'constipated' and "a bit poorly" instead of 'nauseated'. I had never felt so patronised by a GP, she was a fairly young doctor, fresh out of university I would say, and there I was, on my own, 'poor little 18 year old girl'. I was dressed nicely, I spoke to her in standard, formal English, yet she STILL felt the need to talk to me that way! Its almost like she thought she was better than me! I may not know what she knows medical wise, but I am certainly NOT stupid, nor do I lack basic common sense (unlike this "GP"). But you know what, at least I wont spend the rest of my life putting my fingers up people's bottoms, checking men's prostate glands and looking up women's nether regions!
Round Two BING BING BING BING
After I described my symptoms (yet again), she asked me if she could examine my back, so I let her. Now, she said she couldn't feel any thing apart from a few muscular knots, she said improving my posture would be good enough to solve the problem. A "GP" has never been so wrong! After she refused to send me to a physio, I went to see a massage therapist, who, let me just say, isn't a doctor, who told me that my spine was out of line, she could tell this just by feeling the base of back. She then told me to visit a Chiropractor (a skeletal specialist) who would put my spine back into place.
I then booked my appointment with the Chiropractor, who is very good, he popped my spine back into place and I felt FANTASTIC! Much better than I had felt in a long time! Now how come a massage therapist could pick up how out of line my spine was when a so called "trained GP" couldn't!? I felt so uncomfortable, stupid and extremely insulted, I nearly went to reception to file a complaint!
I have NEVER had an experience like this before at any health care specialists, this includes the dentist, at a hospital, the opticians and even seeing different doctors at the same practice. This particular "GP" was very unprofessional and extremely judgemental! Makes me wonder why she is a "GP" at all!

So if you are suffering from back problems yourself, don't bother visiting a GP, hey are RUBBISH at dealing with any kind of back pain. I recommend seeing a registered Chiropractor or even seeing a massage therapist first to try and heal or get to the route of the problem! WAKE UP NHS, these specialists could save you money! They could even save the tax payer money! Not to mention businesses who suffer because their workers have to take time off. It makes complete sense!

It’s nice to know that you’ve had a successful chiropractic therapy. I can only imagine how hard it was to deal with the pain in your body. I’m glad you’ve been referred to a dependable chiropractor. I hope you’ll continue to book your chiropractic appointments in the future to achieve best results. How are you now? :)

I am so much better! I was so disheartened by my Doctors visit that I felt like there wasn't any other route to go down other than medication which obviously, as a 19 year old, is not for me. Also, being spoken to like a complete idiot didn't exactly work in the Doctor's favour either. The Chiropractor I am visiting now is very skilled and I have seen massive changes and not one of them is bad. I find my self doing a lot more, I can sit on a bus without my back aching constantly. It may sound dramatic, but it has been a real life changer for me and I will continue going. I know there is a lot of controversy surrounding the Chiropractic occupation and their work, but to be honest, you just have to research enough about it to ensure you're not hiring a quack who could leave you with long term damage.
DeleteThanks for your comment! Much appreciated!

ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteWhat city do you live in England? x
I had a horrible back spasm thing and went straight to my mum's chiropractor. They took x rays and explained everything to me & showed me stretches to do. As long as I do them I feel great. But I know how it feels to go to a doctor & have then just fill out a prescription. Though I'm from the US so we make doctor visits few & far between.
ReplyDeleteThat must’ve been a painful experience for you. It was a good thing that you went ahead and sought a second opinion, which led you to a registered chiropractor. And it turned out to be the best option for you. Just continue your appointments and follow their advice, so that you can be on your way to a swift recovery. Good luck!
