How to Have a Less Stressful Week
This time of year can be incredibly stressful. It's the start of a new year, we all have new goals and things we want to do or achieve. Depending on what those things are, you may have started the year feeling slightly overwhelmed, much like myself right now to be frank. But despite (hopefully) very exciting things happening this year for me, I often overthink things and end up adding stress to a situation which doesn't need it! So here's how I ground myself and stop that from happening when things feel a little too overwhelming or out of reach.
Have some 'me' time
This is an important one to try and stay sane. Some self-love can do a world of wonders, regardless of what you're thinking, planning or going through. I like to have a pamper evening or spend a weekend relaxing, drinking coffee and watching some brilliant films! I may even begin reading a good book or go for a stroll on my own. I also go to the gym quite a lot on my own, as I quite enjoy having a bit of time out of the day for myself and my own self-development and I often feel much happier and healthier for it, both inside and out.
Take time out once a week to do the important stuff
It can be difficult to have a whole day to yourself to get everything done that you'd like, or need, to get done! I work 9-5 five days a week and I hate taking a whole day out of my much-needed weekend to do the boring stuff, like doing the washing or cleaning the bathroom. So instead, I try and do most of it on a Friday evening (aren't I fun?). This way, I have the whole weekend to myself, reserved for doing things other than clearing out my emails or doing general boring admin. If you take some time out once a week to do the laborious bits, then you'll have the rest of the time to chill and focus on other things.
Tidy, tidy tidy
This doesn't really come under 'important stuff', but a tidy house is a tidy mind and if you keep on top of things, it shouldn't take too much time out of your day to do. At the end of each day, before you settle down and get ready for bed, do a general tidy. Wash up from dinner, put clean crockery away, wipe down surfaces, clear the dining room table etc. It will make you look forward to coming home and chilling out after a long day at work. It also means your house will always be prepped and primed for unexpected visitors!
The importance of rituals the night before
Having a ritual or a bedtime routine the night before can be hugely beneficial to the way we feel the next morning. Going to bed at a decent time will help, but our quality of sleep is hugely dependent on our diets, exercise routines and general state of mind. To try and have a great nights sleep, I'll have a shower, relax, perhaps even light a candle, dim the lights and wind down before eventually falling asleep. I find that I wake up feeling less tired and more refreshed, ready for a productive day ahead!
Do something outside the home
It can be easy to go night after night curled up on the sofa with a glass of wine and a gripping BBC drama, but getting out of the house and socialising is an important part of life in general, and it'll help your state of mind, especially in the long run. Socialising with friends and family is a hugely positive experience, enhancing our general outlook on life in general! I find that whenever I see my friends, my mood is considerably boosted, and that can last a lifetime. Whether you go out with friends, family or your significant other, spend some time outside of your home and do something a little out of the ordinary or different from your everyday routine.
