5 Money Saving Tips for the Avid Online Shopper

We've all been spending money online recently, especially while the shops were shut. Despite many non-essential establishments being able to reopen, many of us are still apprehensive about going out and mingling with the general public again (socially distanced, of course). In a bid to avoid the "new normal" when it comes to shopping sprees, making online purchases continues to be very popular, no matter where you live in the world.

However, it can start to get expensive for us avid online shoppers, therefore, I'll be sharing with you some of my money saving tips when it comes to making purchases over the internet! If you have any more, please leave them in the comments below for others to read :)

1. Go on the hunt for discount and promo codes

I find that a quick search online can often get me money off my online purchases. From Adidas to Feel Unique, there are hundreds of codes that be found on the internet offering certain percentages off your order. Be sure to only use legitimate sites to get decent offers, and remember, if it's too good to be true, it probably is. For example, getting 60% off your Sweaty Betty purchase isn't likely to be legit, so keep a look out for ridiculous deals. The majority of the time, you're able to get 10/15% off items, not 60/75%.

2. Play retailers at their own game

This involves filling your basket full of items you want, then exiting the site instead of paying for them. Wait a while, and soon, the retailer will send you emails containing discounts and other incentives for you to make a purchase with them. Feel Unique are very well known for this, they often send me 15% off discount codes after I've added a series of items to my basket, so I get money off the things I wanted or needed rather than paying the full price.

Many retailers operate this way, so play them at their own game and they'll soon come crawling back with a handful of discount codes or money off options to get you to make a purchase with them, no matter what it is.

3. Time things right

If you fancy a new swimming costume, then shop for it towards then end of the summer when those items are likely to be in the sale. It sounds counterproductive, but summer sales often start while the weather is still warm so you'll be able to pick up a bargain and still use it before the sun goes away. This is the same during the winter sales, you could pick up a brand new coat and still be able to wear it well into the spring. Don't forget about Black Friday, Boxing Day and Cyber Monday sales, especially if it's something electronic you want. It always pays to wait a bit before rushing into a purchase!

4. Sign up to marketing emails

As annoying as this can be, you'll never know what kind of exclusive offers you may receive, especially if you've ordered from the same company a few times already. I've been offered gift vouchers and other decent offers purely through being a loyal customer. Although it came be a pain, it's worth it to get money off your favourite items.

5. Make some online comparisons

You might be able to get the same item cheaper somewhere else if you take the time to shop around. I always do this with beauty items, especially ones that come with a hefty price tag. From perfume to blushers, it's always good to see which company offers the same item for less money. Where John Lewis may only have the product at full price, Debenhams could have an offer on the same product, and so you'll go with Debenhams because they have some money off it.

If you'd have just bought it from John Lewis, you'd be paying full price for something you needn't have. Be vigilant and keep an eye on what offers retailers have on. There might not even have to be a sale on for you to save money by going somewhere else, an item might just be a few pounds cheaper in Boots than in a big department store, so keep that in mind as well!

    1. Hi Leslie,

I find it so hard to refrain from online shopping too, haha! I totally agree though, finding the best prices for the same product is all part of the fun (and satisfaction) knowing you got the same product from less dosh.
