6 Beauty Lessons I've Learnt Over the Years

Having made it to 25, I've got over a decade of experience experimenting with a wide variety of different beauty products, ranging from makeup and skincare to fragrances and hair care. I've been doing some thinking recently, and I've come to the conclusion that, actually, I've learnt quite a bit from my time dabbling in the beauty industry. So much so, I thought I'd share with you the knowledge I've acquired as a result of multiple mistakes being made over the last 10 years or so.

1 | Staying hydrated & getting enough sleep is the secret to great skin

Drinking a generous amount of water each day, together with getting a decent amount of sleep each night will massively improve the condition of your skin. Granted, it won't be overnight, but it will definitely make a wonderful difference.

I remember growing up, several spots would pop up from about the age of 13 to 15, after that, my skin seemed to clear up - a relief to my teenage-self, let me tell you. Acne and other conditions should be spoken about with your doctor, as there's no quick fix for that.

But whether you want to improve the condition of your skin or not, drinking plenty and getting an adequate amount of sleep will benefit your overall health :)

2 | Skincare gets priority over makeup

Your skin provides a canvas for your makeup, so it's only right that you should look after it as best you can. A smooth, clear foundation for applying your cosmetics will set you up for a great makeup day, so don't skip your evening or morning skincare routine just to throw some makeup on before you leave the house. Get up earlier and take the time to look after your skin, and not just the skin on your face!

No, makeup doesn't go on your arms and legs, but you need to be looking after those parts of you as well. This stops skin become tight, itchy or dry. Dry skin can lead to cracking, which is then left open to infection.

Self-care also includes rubbing some Righteous Butter into your arms and legs. That, together with your facial skincare, will leave you feeling silky smooth and smelling incredible.

3 | Don't be afraid to experiment

Experimentation is what will set you apart from the crowd, I've learnt not to always follow the trends or the makeup look of a friend (something we were all guilty of a school age, I'm sure). Experimentation can also open up a variety of different options when it comes to makeup, that you wouldn't have thought to do or even try otherwise.

No matter how scared or anxious you may feel about a new look, own it! Once you've realised that it really isn't that bad, then you'll be all the more likely to try it again and more of your style and personality will come out.

4 | There is such a thing as too much makeup

Like with most things, you can have too much of a good thing, and this also applies to the application of makeup. Having a light hand when it comes to makeup is key to enhancing features even further without caking your face in foundation and blusher.

It's also important that you find a foundation that matches your skin tone, because we all know what happens when you apply a foundation that's completely wrong for your complexion. Mascara that makes your lashes look like spiders' legs is also a blunder, as is lipstick so drying that you feel like your lips could start peeling off at any moment.

But, how do you stop these mistakes from happening? Don't apply as much! A thin layer of foundation, a light brushing of mascara and an adequate amount of lipstick will suffice just as much and probably look even better than when layers of makeup are applied.

5 | Take off your makeup before you fall asleep

One of the worst things you can do is go to sleep with your makeup on. As your skin gets older, it becomes a lot less forgiving, meaning the effects from sleeping with your makeup on will soon show, no matter how hard you try to hide it.

Sleeping with a full face of makeup on will make it feel horrific the next day, so don't keep doing it. I'll be honest, there have been times where I've forgotten to do this once in a while, but I wake up the next morning and instantly regret not removing my makeup the night before.

6 | Don't care about what anyone else thinks

Being unapologetic about the choices you make when it comes to makeup and skincare will put your in good stead. If you want to wear bright purple lipstick, then you do that! If you want to dye your hair blue, then go for it.

Your cosmetic choices won't harm anyone, so you do you and be individualistic, because life's too short to conform to what society wants you to look like. Let your personality shine through and never be sorry for being you.
