6 Gardening Jobs for Autumn

Gardening might seem furthest from your mind at this time of year, but just because the sun has cooled and the leaves are falling doesn't mean that you should let your gardening game go down the drain. If anything, you need to ramp it up a bit. but what should you be doing in your garden throughout the autumn? Let's find out!

1. Plant spring bulbs

If you're after a stunning display of spring tulips and daffodils, then now is the time to plant your spring bulbs. You can plant your spring bulbs in the border or in pots - whatever you think is best. I wrote an article about how to plant a spring bulb lasagne, so read that here if you're interested.

2. Tidy

Tidying things up a bit is a great place to start if you aren't sure about autumn garden maintenance. This involves removing leaves and other dead foliage, giving your plants and bushes one last cut and giving the lawn a mow on a high setting. Keeping your garden tidy throughout the autumn will make your life easier come spring.

3. Don't start neglecting your lawn

Just because summer is over doesn't mean to say that you can start forgetting about lawn care. What you do now will make all the difference come the spring. Continue to mow your grass right up until November.

You should NEVER cut your grass short at this time of the year. Put your lawn mower on the highest setting to protect the grass roots from the frost. Remove any fallen leaves to allow the grass to breathe. A final lawn feed is also. good idea, alongside any measures you can take to keep the lawn aerated.

You can buy an aerator for lawns that will make things easier for you. We have one, which is easier and quicker to use than a garden fork. Just make sure that you continue to remove debris from the lawn throughout the season as a bare minimum.

4. Protect tender plants from the cold

Now ins the time to start wrapping your tender plants in fleece or bringing them in for the winter. If you have a greenhouse, then put them in there. We put our tender plants in the garage for the winter. You could even bring them into your porch or place them in an outbuilding.

As long as they're out of direct wind and frost, they should be good. Wait for the temperature to drop below 5 degrees Celsius before taking the steps and prepare them for winter according to the species of plant or flower you have.

5. Clean & store garden tools

You're less likely to need to use your gardening tools at this time of year, so you can safely pack away your gardening spades, forks and shears for the year. I'd recommend giving them a clean and protecting them from rust. You can do this by spraying a little WD40 on the metal section of the tools.

6. Give your shrubs, trees & hedges a final prune

Your trees, shrubs, hedges and bushes will soon enter a dormant phase, so the autumn is the perfect time to give everything a final tidy ready for winter. You'll find that they'll stay short and trim until the spring rolls around if you do this now. If they do start to grow back, it'll only take a quick trim to get them back to being neat and tidy for the season ahead.
