Why it's Okay for You to Hit "Unfollow"

Unfollowing accounts on social media is still quite taboo. It's something that's done discreetly to avoid confrontation or to prevent hurting someone's feelings. But hitting "unfollow" is actually something you shouldn't have to worry about in this digital age. here's why it's okay for you to hit "unfollow" on social media, whether it be Instagram, TikTok, Facebook or X.

The accounts you follow aren't making you feel good

Social media should make you feel good while you scroll on it. If it's making you feel down or upset, then it's okay to unfollow them. You can unfollow them and follow someone else who does bring you joy, but you also don't have to replace them with any other account if you don't want to. If your social media feed isn't making you feel good, then it's time to make some changes, and that often means unfollowing.

People have changed, & that's okay

You change and those who you follow change over time. It's okay not to follow someone that you did when you were fifteen, now that you're in your thirties. As lives move on and people start new chapters in your life, they can become unrelatable if they're not in the same part of their life that you're in, and vice-a-versa. It's okay for people to change, and it's also okay for someone to align who they follow to those changes.

You don't have to explain yourself

When you unfollow someone, you don't have to explain why you're doing it. You don't owe anyone an explanation as to why you've done it. Don't worry about what other people will think, if it's not bringing you any joy to continue following an account, then remove yourself from its fold.

You've found yourself comparing your life to someone else's

Comparing lives isn't healthy, but it's easily done when you're knees-deep in social media content that seems completely out of reach or unrealistic for the average person. While much of what we see on social media has been engineered to looking rosy, it's difficult to remember that distinction during scrolling time. So, if you find yourself comparing your life to someone else's, especially if it's completely unattainable, then it's time to hit "unfollow".

Unfollowing isn't the same as falling out

What you have to remember is that unfollowing someone doesn't mean falling out with them. You can like someone in real life but still decide that their online content isn't something you want to see every single day. You can easily create distance between yourself and that person online, but remain close in real life.

It gives you permission to curate your own feed

Social media allows you to have control over your experience. This makes the whole thing more enjoyable. Follow accounts that inspire you, make you laugh, teach you something or that genuinely brighten your day. Align the accounts you follow with your own hobbies, interests and aspirations for genuinely good vibes and mantras.

Digital decluttering can feel liberating

Decluttering wardrobes, cupboards and drawers feels good, so why not translate that to the digital world? A more intentional social media feed can mean fewer distractions, less comparisons and more enjoyable scrolling. It doesn't have to be dramatic, it just has to involve some level of bravery. You should also keep in mind that unfollowing someone doesn't mean that you're cutting them out of your life.

You're allowed to change your mind

You're allowed to outgrow the social media accounts you've been following since you were young. You're allowed to protect your own energy and mental health, so if you no longer want to follow people whose content interests you then feel free to unfollow them for a more positive, peaceful and personal experience while you're browsing the internet.
