Why We Need to Stop Glorifying 'Being Busy'

Being too busy has become an excuse for a lot of things these days. It's an excuse that's used in response to people dragging their feet over tasks that are still outstanding, but are also of the utmost importance.

Where it's not always the fault of the person who is busy, it's still not something that should be glorified or looked at in a positive light. There are multiple reasons for that, from lacking completely in productivity to personal burnout, here's why we need to stop glorifying 'being busy':

Being busy doesn't equate to productivity

Just because you're busy doesn't mean that you're being productive. They're actually very different things. You shouldn't need to be busy to be productive. If anything, having too much to do will hinder how much you actually get done.

We'll go through the reasons way in the next few points below, but being busy can make you feel all over the place. That means you 'bit and bob', as I like to call it. You'll find that you're not really getting as much done as you think you are, because you're losing track, essentially. That's reason number one as to why being busy isn't something to glorify.

Being too busy leads to burnout

When you have too much to do, it can lead to burn out. This is because you think you're so busy that you start burning the candle at both ends. If you're busy at work and have to put some overtime in, then you'll finish later, but you'll still find the time to go to the gym, eat dinner, do a food shop and watch a bit of telly.

However, there aren't enough hours in the day, so you'll go to bed late and then wake up early to get some more work done and the whole cycle will start again. Doesn't that sound hectic? Being busy has nothing but negative consequences, and feeling burnt out is one of them.

Being busy isn't always fulfilling

Going back to the fact that being busy isn't productive, if you're getting nothing done, then you're less likely to feel fulfilled or satisfied with the work you're doing. Being busy can leave you feeling overwhelmed and unaccomplished, so take a step back for a bit and take stock. This helps to give you some time to drum up a to-do list that's based on their priority level, giving you a chance to get the most top-level jobs done first and, therefore, you'll feel fulfilled in your work.

Being busy has negative consequences on other things

Being too busy can take your attention away from other things that are going on. That goes for both work and everyday life. Being busy at work can mean that you start slacking in other areas, and that can lead to a bit more than just having something left on your to-do list. It could lead to unhappy customers or the loss of some clients from your client base.

Being busy is never a good thing and something needs to be done to make sure that you aren't so busy. Don't get me wrong, we all have things that need to be done, but you should be going at a decent pace rather than completing tasks or getting things done in a rush. It never ends well and there's no such thing as multi-tasking, only doing many things badly.
