Little Ways to Live More Sustainably
There are many ways in which you can live more sustainably. Often, they're very simple and easy to follow, you could even find yourself doing some of these things already, without noticing. But just in case you wanted to make a bit more effort reducing your carbon footprint, then here are a few more ways in which you can live a little more sustainably.
Eat Locally
The convenience of supermarkets has changed the way in which people eat in this modern age. Instead, visit farm shops and local produce stores to gather ingredients for a healthy, delicious, locally sourced meal. Despite common assumptions, farm shops and green grocers are relatively inexpensive in comparison to chain food stores, you'll most likely be pleasantly surprised, not to mention impressed by how fresh the produce actually is. I've never seen beef tomatoes or avocados so ripe and engorged as when they're locally grown with love and care. Once you go fresh and local, there's no going back to limp and stunted supermarket veg.
Plant Seeds
Try growing your own food. Start with something small and simple, such as tomato or strawberry plants. These will thrive outdoors during the summer months. If you have a green house, you may even be lucky enough to grow them all year round. Home-grown produce always tastes amazing too, as well as the satisfaction you get at the end of it, eating something you know you have grown yourself. It can be somewhat rewarding.
Recycle
This is a super simple way to live more sustainably. Recycling as much waste as possible can be hugely beneficial to the environment. Yes, it requires a bit of effort, but washing out yoghurt pots and jam jars is a small price to pay to try and save our planet.
Drink from the Tap
Now as an avid water drinker, I know that bottled water will never taste the same as the stuff that comes out of the tap, and there's a good reason for that. The water we buy has been treated and filtered, taking out all the chlorine and other bits and bobs that can be found in tap water. But fear not, because there's a simple solution. Buy a water filter. There's not a huge difference between that and bottled water, not to mention, you'll also be limiting the amount of single use plastic you buy and subsequently throw away.
Donate
It's so easy, in the society we live in, to simply throw things away, knowing full well you can replace it with fast fashion. Instead, donate the items which are suitable for second hand use, and let someone else enjoy those shoes or that mug. If you have items which aren't quite good enough for charity shop sale, you can give your rags away to them instead. Once or twice a month, a third party will come along and make use of those rags which aren't much good for anything else. Basically, limit the amount you throw away as much as possible, and that, as you can tell, doesn't always apply to the food we flippantly send to landfill.
Ditch the Car
Not only is this a healthy option, it also helps the environment considerably. Whether you bike it to the office or catch a bus along with many other people, you're preventing anther car from polluting the environment. Lift sharing, although it requires one car, can also be effective. Simply still, you could always get up a little earlier and walk to work instead, especially now we're into the warmer, summer months.
