5 Tips for Becoming a Morning Runner

Running is often hard enough for some people, let alone getting it being one of the first things you do in the morning. If you aren't used to it, then it can hit you like a tonne of bricks, especially if you don't prepare properly beforehand. So if you're interested in switching up or restructuring your running routine, then here are a few hints and tips to help you bring out the morning runner in you.

1. Get a good night's sleep

No matter what it is you're planning on doing, getting enough sleep is usually the one thing that can help your day run as smoothly and as happily as possible - it's also the same for if you're planning a morning run. You need to conserve your energy for the exertion ahead, and getting enough sleep plays a vital part in that.

Go to bed earlier, don't use your phone before sleeping and don't eat too late at night - these are all ways in which can get a quality night's sleep. If you'd like to learn more about how to get a great night's sleep, then take a look at this blog post for some advice.

2. Prepare your kit the night before

Just like if you're planning a busy day, make sure you prepare everything you need the night before. Make sure the device you use to track your runs is fully charged, locate your headphones and lay out your running kit ready to slip on the next morning. This will save you so much time when it comes to D-day, meaning you'll have as long as humanly possible in the land of nod - thank me later.

3. Warm up properly

Your muscles are a lot more likely to be stiff first thing in the morning, so make sure you stretch and prep your limbs properly. This will reduce your chances of injury either during or after your run as well as ensure you'll be as fast and efficient as possible whilst your run is underway.

4. Take it easy

Much like the previous point, your body won't be fully ready yet to go out and go for an intense run, so take things easy and start off slow. Once you build up some momentum and your breathing becomes more consistent, that's when you can pick things up slightly, but keep in mind that your body will still feel a little clunky at that time in the morning, especially if you haven't actually been awake for very long.

5. Think about the positives when getting up in the morning

It can be painful thinking about getting up in the morning and going for a run as soon as you step foot out of bed. But think about all the benefits that you'll be able to experience. There are loads of different benefits to going for an early morning run that you can keep in mind for when getting out of your warm, toasty bed and setting out on your jog, including:
  • Improves productivity
  • Kick-starts your metabolism
  • Better joint health
  • Improves mental health
  • Creates a routine
