How to Keep An Open Bottle of Wine Fresh for as Long as Possible

There’s nothing worse than opening a bottle of wine and then coming back a couple of days later to find that it’s gone off. So I thought of some ways in which I could keep a bottle of wine fresh for as long as possible even though I’d already opened it. So I thought I’d pass down my tips to you guys!

Store out of direct light

You should always limit the amount of light your wine is exposed to, whether open or not. But if you've already opened it and are looking to keep it as fresh as possible for a long period of time, then you should find some dull or dark spaces around your kitchen to keep it in. Often, inside a kitchen cupboard is the best bet as it's also slightly cool and dry.

Keep it refrigerated

Whether red or white, it's something that'll help to keep your wine lasting longer, even after it's been opened. If it's a red bottle, take it out half an hour or so before you want to drink it to let it settle back down to room temperature. White wine should always be kept in the fridge, however.

This is because oxygen is wine's number one enemy. When exposed to the wine, oxygen can alter its composition after a while which, in turn, will cause it to taste almost like vinegar. Basically, it undergoes oxidisation. While keeping it cool won't stop this process entirely, it will slow it down considerably, therefore keeping it fresh for as long as possible.

Use wine stoppers

It's important that, if your wine is corked, that you bung it up again once open with a wine stopper. Like we've already touched on, oxygen is not something that you want flooding into your bottle of wine, so a wine stopper will help to reduce the amount of oxygen that reaches it, although it won't eliminate the contact altogether.

Keep it up right

This might sound like commonsense if you have an open bottle of wine, purely to ensure it doesn't leak, but it is also good for another reason and it comes back to oxygen exposure. It ensures a small surface area is exposed to the oxygen. If you lie it down, the surface area of the liquid will become greater. Keep it upright to try and keep it fresh for as long as possible.
