Our Garden Reveal: A Few Improvements

If you're hoping for a before and after-type post, then you'll be disappointed with this one. When we bought the house, it was over-run with plants, the fences were dirty and covered in bird muck, the trellis at the back by the tree was rotten and falling apart and the decking that was originally there was unstable, loose and like walking across a diving board.

All of the wood was also untreated and the pergola roof was peeling off in the wind. The wood used to keep the pergola up swayed in the wind as well, to the point where no one really wanted to stand near it. So we ripped the pergola down and took up the decking boards. The decking the previous owners put down wasn't attached to any frame, either, hence why it was so unstable.

The wood that was there was rotten and there was an old holly bush under there that used to grow up and through the decking boards. We had to shift a lot of soil, gravel and, notably, rubble. It was filled with rubbish that the previous owners buried under the decking, so we took plenty of trips to the tip, unfortunately. That was just to put our new decking down.

The old decking was also a very odd shape, so we took up several patio slabs in order to square everything up a bit. The patio was also laid on soil, so I had a lot of de-weeding and de-mossing to do as it all grew up in between the slabs. I will push some sand and cement in there at some point so it has less chance of coming back in the future.

You might also find that we have painted all of the fence panels another colour. The previous owners painted it orange and it was covered in moss, dirt and bird poo, which I had to clean off before painting. I also had to prune back several of the bushes and plants so I could access the fence panels, so a lot of prep-work was needed initially.

We also replaced the rotting trellis, which houses a rambling rose, with one that we had when we bought the house, which looked nicer and and was in better condition, although that was also dirty and covered in moss. I cleaned it up and gave it a paint, then replaced the old one for that one, which looks just like new. We have some new plants as well, like the garden Mums next to the BBQ.

Seeing as we painted the fence panels in grey, we wanted to paint the decking grey as well, which has had three coats. I can't believe we managed to get it done during a month that was so wet and grey, looking back on it, haha. You might also be wondering about why we have the feather boards up on the garage. That's because the back of the garage is old and the previous owners managed to get their paint all over the brickwork. It also has eves that are wooden and rotten, so we wanted to cover that as well. Of course, we painted those grey to match!

You might have also noticed the trough with two flowers in it. When we first moved in, that was a "water feature", which was just a trough filled with stagnant water and some huge stones. So I was beyond excited to get rid of that and repurpose it into something that looks pretty and usable. We are quite pleased with all of the work we have done. It might not sound like much but it really did take a while to complete, especially the decking and the framework underneath. But let me stop badgering on and show you some more piccies :)
