What Does a Copywriter (Actually) Do?

If you're new to this blog, then you won't be aware of what I do for a living. I am a copywriter, which hasn't got anything to do with the law or Copyright, so don't get the two confused. Seeing as so many people aren't aware of what a copywriter actually does in the world of marketing, I'm here to explain it all to you. So, what does a copywriter (actually) do? Let's take a closer look:

We write articles & blog posts

Writing blog posts, articles and editorials are a key part of my working day. In fact, it probably takes up the majority of my time. Although I love being a copywriter, and everything else that entails, this is my favourite part of copywriting. I love writing, hence why I have this blog, so this is part and parcel of my day to day life and I love it, no matter what I'm writing about!

We have to do our research

Copywriting, whether you're freelance or do it for an agency, involves writing content for a wide range of different clients and industries. It's not always going to be a topic that you know inside and out. If anything, you're writing for clients that work in a variety of workplaces, from warehouses to cooking schools.

So when you need to write an article about something out of your comfort zone, you need to do your research. This can take time, but it ensures your content is fresh, accurate and up to date in terms of facts and statistics. Research is a fundamental skill when it comes to copywriting, which makes it something else that we do.

We write website content

Any words or "copy", as it's known in the industry, has been written by a copywriter. From tiny bits of micro-copy to the extensive paragraphs written under the H1s and H2s (headings and subheadings), copywriters have had a hand in its creation.

In fact, they've had more than just a hand in it. They would have looked through the existing website and/or learnt everything could about the client and their business before writing the copy for their website.

Also, they would have to have done keyword research so that it ranks as highly as possible in the search engine results page (SERP). There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes when it comes to creating the content for any website, and much of the leg work has been done by a copywriter, in some form or another.

We can create newsletters & manage email subscriptions

If you've received an email as part of a subscription or are a recipient of a monthly newsletter, then a copywriter has written it all for you. Anything that involves the writing of long-form content has been carried out by a copywriter; someone like me. Our skills go far beyond that of writing articles and website copy.

We can create infographics, podcasts & other forms of content, aside from written

It's not just the written word that copywriters have the skills to create. We also have the responsibility of producing visual and audio content, including posters, infographics, leaflets, podcasts and more. If you can see, hear and/or read anything in the digital world, it's most likely been created by a copywriter.

We create content calendars

You might be wondering how content is published regularly and consistently, especially seeing as copywriters are often so busy. The answer to that is simply a content calendar. A calendar will include a whole of host of information, including the title of the article, keywords that need to be used, the topic it concerns, notes, research links and when it should be published.

It gives copywriters clear and concise deadlines that means content is published at regular intervals. Content calendars are a fantastic tool that almost every copywriter is likely to have in their tool box.

We generate our own article ideas using keyword research

Keyword research is every copywriter's best friend. While SEO specialists can carry out this research for us, it doesn't take too much time to get your head down and research more into the keywords that are being searched for right now.

It helps to get the content noticed in the SERPs. The higher up the page it gets, the more traffic it will attract, which is the whole point. This is why keyword research is so important. I like to use things like Google Search Console, Google Keyword Planner and Google Analytics.
