4 Tips for Maintaining a Wooden Fence
Wooden fences. They're both lovely to look at and a pain to maintain. but it has to be done. In this article, I'm going to be giving you some tips for maintaining a wooden fence. They're expensive to replace, so why not look after it properly to put off its replacement? Here are four tips for maintaining wooden fences:
1. Clean it
Before you paint or stain the fence, make sure you give it a clean. You should clean it generally, to be honest, even if you aren't planning of giving the paint a refresh. Remove algae growth and any dirt that might have splashed up onto the wood. This might take some paint off, so just give it a repaint on the affected areas. I always like to paint the entire fence, not just sections of it, however, to give it an even finish.
2. Paint or stain it
If your fence is brand new, it's best to leave the wood untreated for at least six months. After this time, you need to either paint or stain it to preserve it. This prevents the wood from rotting, as well as enables you to put your stamp on your garden easily.
3. Inspect it for damages
This is especially important after a storm, high winds or heavy rain. It's also a good idea to just have a general check of your fences, as even something as simple as a burrowing animal can cause damage to your wooden fences.
4. Remove any plant growth
Ivy can cause a lot of damage, as can other climbing plants. Make sure your fence isn't being used a prop-up for those. Not only can this cause the wood to split, but it can also cause moisture to become trapped, therefore rotting the wood underneath. It's always best to remove any plant growth on a wooden fence if you want to maintain it.
