4 Tips for Keeping Wasps Away from Your BBQ

We're nearing the end of the summer season, but the warm weather has persisted, which means we're still making the most of the last of the heat. We like to spend some time in our new-and-improved garden, enjoying some good food and refreshing homemade mojitos. But one thing that has stuck around are the wasps, and they're a right pain. So it got me thinking of ways to keep them away from our food. Seeing as it actually worked, 90% of the time, I thought I'd share them with you. I hope they work for you as well!

1. Put strong-scented plants close to where you're eating

This might sound counter-productive, but wasps actually don't like really strong-scented plants and flowers. Although you should refrain from sweet-smelling flowers, you should opt to grow things like: tomatoes, mint, curry plants and even lavender. Place those plants in pots and bring them close to your seating area. Alternatively, grow them in borders, troughs or window boxes to keep the pests out of your garden and out of your home.

2. Avoid growing anything really colourful

Wasps are attracted to bright and bold colours, much like bees. If you don't want them to come into your garden, then move your brightly-coloured flowers, if they're in containers, or don't bother growing them at all. If you'd like plants in your garden, opt for green or muted tones, like long grasses, conifers and green shrubs with glossy leaves.

3. Cover your food & drink when you're not consuming it

Wasps are mainly attracted to smells before anything else. So one way to keep them at bay is to keep your food and drink covered, especially if it's strong-scented and sweet-smelling. Put food in containers and put a lid on it. To cover your drinks, use cupcake cases or coffee filters over the top of your cup. The fact that they're paper also means that you'll be able to poke a hole through for your straw to come up through, if you're using one.

4. Distract them with something sweet

Another way to keep them away from your food is to set up a station that's located far away from where you're sitting and place sweet food there. if you have any strawberry stems lying around or apple cores that have been left behind, put them on a paper towel and leave them out for the wasps to feast on. They'll likely go straight to the readily-available fruit than buzz around your picnic or barbecue.
