How to Take Control of Your Weekend

The weekend - music to my ears! I love a good, relaxed weekend, but I also enjoy ones that are busy and bustling, something I think we all miss what with lockdown still being in place. But I think we're all yearning for a time when our weekends are back to normal and are ours again. But while we wait for that moment, here are a few ways you can take control of your weekends now, even during such an uncertain, peculiar time.

Think positive thoughts

Being positive is paramount to taking control and making the most of your weekend. Thinking negative things like 'I'm so busy' or 'I'm not looking forward to this' or 'I can't be asked with this' will only stall your productive plans for the days ahead. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, then perhaps postpone your plans and take a couple of rest days instead.

You can always reschedule errands, if you can. But don't see taking a rest day as a failure, because that's most definitely not the case, it's just you taking that free time and using it to focus on yourself. Then you'll feel even more refreshed for the week ahead after switching off for a couple of days.

Try and start the day early

If you feel like you don't need a rest day and are perfectly happy to use your weekend to run errands, then don't sleep half the day away. You can still have a lie in, that's something we all enjoy after a week of full time work, but try not to stay in bed until lunchtime, get an extra hour or two of sleep and then get up and be ready to go. You'll be surprised at what you can get done in a day with a bit of extra time, especially on a Sunday.

Find a healthy balance between making plans and going with the flow

Making plans is an important part of a normal weekend, but so is relaxing and going with the flow. It's important that you strike the right balance between the two, because it could end up either being very hectic or very boring! You can be excited to have plans lined up, but don't try and pack too much into it and be as flexible as possible to allow yourself some spare time to do with as you wish. If you fail to do something one weekend, then you can always get it done the week after.

Try a digital detox

Digital detoxes can you do a world of good psychologically, so perhaps try and dedicate one day of your weekend to a digital detox. Spend 24 hours refraining from looking at your mobile phone or any form of social media.

You might even find that you sleep better at night having not looked at a screen for so long, as it's proven the blue background light can keep make difficult, or even prevent, people from getting a good night's kip. If you'd like to learn more about digital detoxes, why they're good for you and how to do it properly, then take a look at the blog post I wrote recently.

Get over the 'Sunday Blues'

Look at Sunday as a chance to recharge before a brand new week, plan ahead, get organised, feel productive and ready to go and then the rest will follow. Don;t apply negativity to a Sunday before it even rolls around because you may just end up feeling miserable the whole time. If you really want to avoid the 'Sunday Blues' then do some prep work for Monday on the Friday night rather than Sunday evening.
