Why Skipping Breakfast Isn't a Good Idea
I always thought that skipping breakfast wasn't a bad thing. I didn't see the point of eating breakfast if I wasn't hungry and I was always of the mind that it lowered by calorie intake for the day. But it never occurred to me, until I looked it up, that skipping breakfast is actually doing more harm than good. Here's what I found during my research as to why skipping breakfast isn't a good idea.
It can impact cognitive function
Skipping breakfast can negatively impact your cognitive function, claims Science Direct. To the contrary, eating a healthy breakfast improves memory, attention and focus. This is often why schools will put on breakfast clubs for children so that their brains can function at the optimum performance for learning new things.
It boosts cravings
According to the National Library of Medicine, skipping breakfast causes food cravings later on in the day. Those cravings aren't healthy, either, often leading to us craving sweet treats like chocolates or choosing high-calorie alternatives to healthy food.
It slows down metabolism
Jane Plan states that skipping breakfast can cause your metabolism to slow down. This is because you've skipped a meal that your body is expecting, thus causing you to go into starvation mode. In order for the body to conserve energy, it will slow down your metabolism which can be a cause for weight gain.
It depletes nutrition intake
Skipping breakfast can limit your nutrition intake, claims The British Nutrition Foundation. This is more the case if you're having a healthy, hearty breakfast, like porridge. But having a decent breakfast boosts your nutrient intake, making it less likely that you'll be deficient in things like iron and Vitamin D.
It lowers blood pressure
According the Health Match, having a good breakfast helps to lower blood pressure. By having a healthy breakfast every day, it can stabilise blood sugar levels and provide sustained energy throughout the day.
