6 Gardening Supplies I Will Never Buy from a Garden Centre

Garden centres are great. I love to spend a day there, just looking at the flowers and the plants and seeing what they offer by way of gardening tools, furniture, BBQs and loads more.

But there are some things that I just won't buy from a garden centre because the value for money just isn't there. Here are six things that I won't buy from a garden centre, but that I'll often get from elsewhere to save some cash.

1. Compost

Compost is so expensive at the garden centres. I'll often get it while it's on offer at hardware stores like Wickes and B&Q. Even the supermarkets sell quality compost for a third of the price. Trust me, it's definitely something you should shop around for before buying from the garden centre.

2. Plant food

Plant food is something that is readily available at most places, even shops like B&M and Home Bargains. It's often far cheaper to buy it from those shops than from the garden centres. Plant food from a garden centre could cost £8, but I can get it from a supermarket for £4.

3. Weed killer

Weed killer is something I like to get from the supermarkets, hardware stores and places like B&M. They're the exact same product, same brand and same volume, but the price is less than in the garden centres, which is why I'll always avoid buying weed killer from there.

4. Pesticides

I don't like to use pesticides unless they're bee and wildlife-friendly. But I'll refrain from buying insect spray from the garden centres just based on their price. I can get the same thing from elsewhere for a fraction of the price.

5. Stakes & wire

Bamboo stakes are great for propping up plants and training flowers to grow a certain way. You often need stakes and wire to get the job done, but I won't buy it from the garden centres. I bought bamboo canes and a reel of wire from Tesco for £2, whereas bamboo canes in the garden centre were £5 per pack alone.

6. Grass seed

Grass will always need over-seeding at the start and end of the summer season. But I will not buy grass seed from the garden centres. You can get quality grass seed from the supermarkets and hardware stores that are a third of the cost of grass seed from the garden centre.
