7 Tips for Visiting Food & Drink Festivals

Summer is the season for food and drink festivals across the country and they can be a bit of minefield when it comes to where to start what the logistics of attending one might be. From the parking to the weather and everything in between, here are my tips for visiting a food and drink festival this summer.

1. Check the opening & closing times

It sounds daft, but check the opening and closing times before you go, especially if you're planning on going on a Sunday. Often, they don't stay open as long as you think they do. If you have to pay to enter, then you want to make sure you're making the most of your day there, not just an hour or two. Check when it opens and closes and make that information work for you.

2. Bring some cash

Although most places will accept cards, not everyone will for various reasons. It's always best to come with some cash just in case. That and technology can let people down, so you might find that a technical glitch could stop you paying with a card and you won't get to try that delicious food and drink that you've been eyeing up all day.

3. Be prepared for all weathers

Unless you know for sure that it's going to be sunny and blazing hot or that it's going to be raining all day, it's always best to be prepared for everything the weather could hit you with. If there's a chance of rain, bring an umbrella or waterproof, for example. If there's a chance of sun, bring a hat, sunglasses and sun cream and so on. The weather could ruin your day, so make sure it doesn't by being prepared.

4. Walk around the whole place first & then go back to the stalls that caught your eye

I always like to take a good walk around the whole place before going to try any of the food they're offering. You might find that two or three stalls are serving the same things, so don't just stop at the first stall you see. Have a good look around and make a mental note of the stalls you'd like to go back to before making any purchases.

5. Pace yourself

There are often LOADS of food and drink stalls at these events, but if you're going to make a day of it, pace yourself. Don't eat everything in sight in the first hour or so. Have a nibble, enjoy a drink, sit down and relax and then have another walk around and see what there is. Take it easy. You have the whole day ahead of you, so pace yourself.

6. Share your food

Sharing your food with the person (or people) you've come with is a great way of trying different foods without breaking the bank or getting full too quickly. Not only will it save you money, as there's no point myself and my husband ordering the same thing, but it also gives you the chance to try two or three different dishes from the same stall without paying again for the same thing.

7. Look up what the parking situation is

If you're travelling to the food and drink festival, then make sure you're double-checking the parking situation. Where can you park your car safely and how much is it going to cost? I like to do this before buying tickets to go to these food and drink festivals.

If, for instance, you're already paying £10 each for an admission ticket, and the parking is £20, then that's £40 for us before we've even set foot in the place and tried any of the food offerings. is £40+ really worth it? The parking charges could be the make or break decision for me.

I'm sure it would be for a lot of other people wanting to have a good day out, especially if you have a family. Also, you need to make sure that your car is being parked somewhere secure and not just on the street being a nuisance to the residents who live nearby.
