5 Mistakes You're Making When You Straighten Your Hair
Straightening your hair might not seem like a challenge at all, especially if it's long and you've been doing it for years. But what if I told you that there are actually some instances where you could be making some mistakes along the way? Here are five possible mistakes you could be making when you straighten your hair.
1. Not applying heat protection
Heat protection sprays for your hair is an imperative step when it comes to hair styling. It provides a protective layer that prevents moisture loss and further damage as a result of the extensive heat that comes from the straightening plates.
2. Using straighteners on wet hair
This mix of moisture and heat creates steam and will often result in a sizzling noise. This is causing damage to the hair strands. Even if your hair is just a little bit damp, make sure it's completely dry and that you've used a heat protector before putting hair straighteners to it.
3. Having the heat setting too high
Straighteners that are set too high can cause damage to your hair. While some straighteners will have the option to change the temperature, others won't. Choose a model that is set at around 170-190 degrees Celsius. Obviously, if you can change the temperature, choose one that sits within that range to minimise heat damage.
4. Going over the same spot too many times
Over passing too often can cause unnecessary damage to the hair strands. You also want to make sure that you're not passing over your hair too slowly as it concentrates the heat to particular sections. Sweep over the hair at a moderate pace and don't linger. Having the temperature set to the right range will help to prevent multiple pass overs.
5. Using dirty or old tools
Dirty or old straighteners will have a buildup of residue. Especially if you use hair spray and heat protectors. Clean your tools or replace them when they show signs of wear or damage. Not only does this protect your safety, but it also protects your hair as snags or pulling on the hair is prevented.
