A Review: Dove DermaSpa 'Summer Revived' Self-Tanning Lotion (Fair-to-Medium)
I'm never normally one to go down the self-tanning route. Often, I think it's a lot more hassle than it's worth. But I decided to try again this summer. The last time I used a gradual self-tanning lotion, I was about 21 and I went for the Garnier 'Body Summer' gradual tanning lotion.
I found that it took forever to work. By the time it did start to show signs of working, it was either too dark or too orange. Not being too impressed with the results from that one, I decided to try a different brand, 8 years on.
The reviews were good for this Dove gradual self-tanning lotion, which swayed my decision to purchase this one. I've given it a try for a few weeks now and I feel as though I'm finally ready to give an honest review on it. So here are my thoughts on the Dove DermaSpa 'Summer Revived' Self-Tanning Lotion in fair-to-medium.
What is the Dove DermaSpa 'Summer Revived' Self-Tanning Lotion consistency like?
The consistency is what you'd expect from any lotion, whether it's a self-tanning one or not. It's not thick, like a body butter, but it's not too runny, either. It's not a gel-consistency, in case you were wondering.
It's definitely just a creamy consistency with just the right amount of density to apply the lotion to the skin evenly and with little effort required. There aren't any issues if you're just going to focus on the consistency of the product alone.
How long does it take for the Dove DermaSpa 'Summer Revived' Self-Tanning Lotion to take effect?
It says on the tube that you'll see results in as little as 72 hours, but I'd confidently disagree with that time frame. I found that I saw results, pretty much, overnight. I'd happily say that I saw a difference in the colour of my legs in about 12 hours, bringing them from pale to sun-kissed in no time.
If you're looking for gradual results that need to be achieved over several applications, then this isn't the product for you. Where it's not an instant tanning lotion, it does the job in just one day. Bear this in mind if you're planning on wear a dress, a skirt or some shorts any time soon.
What are the results like from the Dove DermaSpa 'Summer Revived' Self-Tanning Lotion?
The results are quick and the fair-to-medium lotion brings about results that are sun-kissed, but with a slight hint of orange, which isn't good for a self-tanning lotion. Although the results are fast, if you're not too keen on the orange look, then don't apply the lotion more than once.
Don't get me wrong, I think most self-tanning lotions will have a slight orange tinge to them, so it's to be expected. But don't expect an authentic tanned look from something that's designed to fake being 'kissed by the sun'.
However, it's definitely less orange than the Garnier self-tanning lotion I mentioned at the start, so I'd still choose this Dove self-tanning lotion over the Garnier one, any day of the week.
Is the Dove DermaSpa 'Summer Revived' Self-Tanning Lotion streak-free?
I don't think any self-tanning product is entirely streak-free. This isn't streak-free completely, but it's one of the best self-tanning lotions I've tried in terms of giving an even finish. I have applied this product both with a tanning mitt and with my hands (making sure to wash them thoroughly after application).
I find that there's no real difference in terms of streakiness between using your hands or using a mitt. It's up to you in terms of how you apply the product, but I can't lie and say it's entirely streak-free, because it's not.
But having said that, it's really not that noticeable. You really do have to look closely at the skin. If you want a fake tan that's streak-free, have it done professionally and don't go down the self-tanning route.
Would I purchase the Dove DermaSpa 'Summer Revived' Self-Tanning Lotion again?
In short, yes. Would I be more likely to repurchase this one over the Garnier one? Definitely. Is it something I would recommend as a self-tanning lotion? For sure! If you're looking for a decent self-tanning lotion that is both affordable, works quickly and provides even results with decent colour, then this is the one for you.
