5 Things You Can Do On A Long Haul Flight to Keep Yourself Occupied
We're in the season of holiday-making, still. While the kids are still off for the summer holidays and whilst the British summer weather continues to disappoint, people are continuing to jet off somewhere that's warm and sunny.
So if you're going on a long haul flight any time soon, you might be wondering how on Earth you're going to keep yourself occupied. Well, I've been on several long haul flights, so I think that gives me the experience to impart some useful advice about what you can do to fight the boredom. So how can you keep yourself occupied on a long haul flight? Here are some of my ideas:
1. Watch the in-flight entertainment
In-flight entertainment options are great for those who aren't too bothered about downloading things onto their laptops or iPads. You might be thinking that in-flight entertainment movies aren't top notch. But times have changed slightly. There's more on offer now than there ever has been before. Especially when compared to a long-haul flight I went on more than 10 years ago.
On Virgin Atlantic, in Premium class, at least, they provide you with a pillow, a blanket, a personal hygiene kit (including a toothbrush and toothpaste) and, to top it off, a pair of head phones. You don't even need to bring your own anymore, unless you want ones that are noise-cancelling.
2. Download some films, TV programmes or video games into a personal device
You don't have to just stick with what the plane has to offer on their in-flight entertainment system. I like to go prepared when flying long haul. I do a bit of research and read some reviews, so I can download some of the best movies that the Biz has to offer.
Also, it gives me the opportunity to catch up on some TV programmes or a good series on BBC iPlayer or on Netflix, for example. Just download them onto your iPad or laptop and you're good to go.
3. Read a book or a magazine
Some people like to sit and read on a long haul flight. Whether you read a good book, a magazine or a newspaper, there's always something for you to feast your eyes on when you have that much time to kill. I like to get a couple of books off my bucket list on a long haul flight, but download them onto an iPad or a Kindle to save space, and weight, in your carry on bag.
4. Listen to music, an audio book or a podcast
Something else you can do is listen to music, a good podcast or an audio book when you fly long haul. It's a great way of kicking back and relaxing, but you also don't need to use your eyes, giving you some time to rest them and to get some much-needed relaxation time. But you're also doing something productive. Just stick on your headphones and chill while you wait for your flight to conclude.
5. Go for a walk
I know this sounds a bit daft, but walking up and down the plane aisles is a great way of passing some time. Not only is it a good boredom-buster, but it's also great for your circulation.
You shouldn't be sat down for long periods of time on a long haul flight, so make sure that keep moving. We like to fly premium class, so we get to go up and get snacks and drinks whenever we like. It's a great excuse to get the legs moving.
