6 Reasons Why You Should Remove Your Makeup Before Bed
I know it can be easy to get home after a long day or night and be tempted to go to sleep without taking off your makeup. As a good of an idea as that may seem, you're actually doing a lot more harm than good. But what's the big deal you may ask?
Well I'll be explaining why you should be taking the time to remove your makeup and cleanse your face at the end of every day, rather than sleep in it. Here are six reasons as to why you should remove your makeup before bed:
1. Pores will become clogged, making it more likely that you'll break out
Makeup often involve products like concealer and foundation, not to mention whatever base you've put on before that, together with any setting powder or face powder you've applied to prevent shininess. With all of these products being applied on the face, it can block your pores.
This is especially the case when left on for many hours at a time. Removing your makeup and cleaning your face afterwards with cleanser is the best possible way of avoiding blocked pores and, subsequently, breakouts, or spots and zits.
2. It will dull your complexion
Sleeping with makeup on can affect the natural shredding and exfoliation of your skin that's often done overnight. With a lot of product on the face, it essentially provides a barrier for the skin, which isn't a good thing.
Not only does it prevent it from shredding naturally, it also limits the amount of air that can get to it. All of these things combined can lead to a dull complexion over time - just another reason not to wear makeup in bed.
3. Leaving makeup on overnight will make your skin look aged
Our skin undergoes a natural recovery process overnight, repairing any damage done throughout the day, such as exposure to the sun. When you wear makeup, dirt and bacteria can settle on it and cling there for the rest of the day.
If you do not take off your makeup and clean your face after each day, not only can it cause breakouts, but it will also prevent the skin from renewing itself naturally overnight. This then leads to premature ageing as it can cause the breakdown of collagen in the skin. If we lose collagen, it makes the skin loose, therefore making it more susceptible to sagging and, as a result, wrinkles.
4. Your skin will feel dry
Your skin needs to stay hydrated in order to be as healthy as possible. When you leave your makeup on overnight, you're actually drying the skin out. Makeup products aren't designed with hydration in mind, no matter what the description might say. It's important that you're re-hydrating your skin in between makeup wears.
By failing to do this, you're actually risking your skin drying out considerably. If you're having trouble with dryness, particularly in the T zone, then this could be the problem. Make sure you take your makeup off, cleanse the skin and then apply a nighttime face cream that can hydrate the skin as you sleep.
5. The skin could become irritated
Makeup often contains ingredients that that can irritate the skin on the face, which can be far more sensitive than skin elsewhere on the body. While it'll be alright to wear for a few hours, it can make the skin irritated if it's left on for over a day. This is another reason to remove your makeup before bedtime.
Irritation of the skin can come in many forms, including redness of the skin, inflammation and itchiness. If this is the case, it can lead to wearing even more makeup than you otherwise would have done - to cover up the redness, thus creating a vicious circle. Mitigate the problem altogether by just removing your makeup before you hit the hay.
6. You'll become more at-risk of eye infections
Going back to the issues of irritation of the skin, it can also cause irritation of the eyes. The main cause for this is eye makeup, like mascara and eye liner. Mascara in particular can clog up glands that connect your eyelashes to the eye lids.
Also, excessive eyeshadow can irritate the skin on your eyelids, which is extremely thin and very sensitive, even more so than other areas on the face. You need to treat your eyes with care, and part of that is removing your makeup before you go to sleep at night.
