6 Tips for Coping with Motion Sickness
If you know me, then you'll know that I suffer from motion sickness, quite badly. I do not travel well at all. It doesn't really matter what mode of transport it is. Trains, cars, planes and ferries are absolute no-go for me. If I do have to travel, I often take medication for it, especially if I'm travelling on a plane. But there are some other things I do to cope with motion sickness when it kicks in. Here are six tips for coping with motion sickness as a sufferer:
1. Keep looking at the horizon
Looking far ahead of me, in a straight line, is a great way to prevent travel sickness and to alleviate the effects of it. It gives me something to focus on, that and the horizon isn't fast-moving. Looking forward with my head up is one of the best ways to prevent motion sickness, for me personally.
2. Let plenty of fresh air in
Having the air-con on works when I'm on a fast-moving road, like a motorway or major A-road. However, it's far more effective to just have the windows down, unless it's raining. I have been known to have the windows down in the middle of winter while travelling in the car, because it's the only way to relieve the symptoms of travel sickness.
3. Avoid screens or reading
Looking at screens or reading a book or a magazine, or even a map, can trigger motion sickness. For me, it happens very quickly. Even bending over to pick something up off the floor can trigger my motion sickness. If you're wanting to avoid it, stay focused on something far ahead, as already touched upon, don't look down and refrain from looking out of windows either side of you as well.
4. Take regular breaks
I know this isn't feasible for every mode of transportation, but if you're travelling by car, pencil in some pit stops along the way. I find this is the most effective way of avoiding travel sickness when I forget to take my motion sickness medication (more on that in a moment). If, however, I'm on a train or plane, I actually find it far more useful to sit still rather than go and walk around. I don't know if that's the same for all motion sickness sufferers, but it works for me.
5. Eat a light meal
The last thing you want to do before you travel is to eat a large meal. If you have to eat something, keep it light and stay away from greasy foods and dairy. I find this is the best thing for me in terms of settling my stomach. Also, only sip drinks, don't chug or down anything. I also like to steer clear of caffeine, milky drinks, thick fruit juices and alcohol.
6. Try some over-the-counter medication
If I'm going on long car journeys, or are travelling on a train or plane, then I have to take medication. Nothing else will work. I go my local pharmacy and get me go-to brand - Stugeron-15. These are the only motion sickness tablets that will work for me. But please talk to the pharmacist if you're not used to taking travel sickness medication. Always consult your doctor and follow the instructions on the packet, regardless of the motion sickness tablet brand you choose.
