Log Burner Maintenance: When Should I Get My Chimney Swept?

The frequency at which you get your chimney swept will largely depend on the type of log burner you have and the fuel you're using. One that is lined will need to be swept more than one that isn't for example. There are some instances where a chimney might need to be swept every six months, whether you're using it or not.

The best thing to do here is to check with manufacturer and fitter. However, it's recommended that you have your chimney swept one at the start of the season, before you use it, and again at the end. Some people, like us, will have it swept before the winter season starts, once a year.

But as said previously, this is often dictated by the type of fuel used and type of burner you have installed. Here's some more information you need to know before deciding when to have your chimney swept:

Type of fuel burnt

Quite simply, smokeless fuel fires means that the chimney will only need to be swept once a year. If you're using wood that isn't certified or approved by the right bodies then you'll need to have your chimney swept every six months - once before the cold season and again at the end. This is also the case if you use your log burner regularly, for several hours every single day.

The frequency of use

The frequency at which your log burner is used will dictate how often it will need to be swept, and when. If you use it regularly then every six months is ideal. We opt for a September sweep before winter and, sometimes, another sweep in April or May, depending on how often we've used the log burner within that timeframe.

Chimney type & condition

A lined chimney will need sweeping more often than one that isn't lined. In addition, if it's coated in soot and hasn't been swept for some time, then a sweep will be needed before you even think about lighting a fire in the burner. This is down to creosote buildup which can cause chimney fires in some cases. This is why it's important to have your chimney swept.

Is there an optimal time to have your chimney swept?

Yes, although it largely comes down to commonsense. We find it most effective to have the chimney swept before the winter season. September is a good time of year as not many people are having their chimney swept at that time of year. If you've used your log burner heavily over winter, then schedule another sweep in the spring to ensure a thorough clean and creosote removal.

Why is it so important to have your chimney swept?

First and foremost, it prevents chimney fires. This is THE most important reason to have your chimney swept, if nothing else. Along with the obvious - fire safety - there are some other important reasons to have your chimney swept, including:
  • Improved heat and burning efficiency
  • Maintaining good air quality
  • Preventing burning odours in and around the house
