FAQs About Our New Kitchen: Answered

We recently fitted our new kitchen, and as I've been documenting our progress along the way on Instagram, people have been asking me loads of different questions about the kitchen we have chosen. From the paint on the walls to the floor we have chosen and everything in between, here are some FAQs about our new kitchen: answered.

Where is your kitchen from?

Wickes.

What is the model of your kitchen?

The model we chose was Tiverton.

What colour is your kitchen?

The colour of our kitchen is Pebble.

Why did you choose integrated appliances?

We chose integrated appliances because we wanted the kitchen to look sleek, modern and tidy. I hate having free-standing appliances on show. I'd much prefer to have those machines hidden behind a door that matches the rest of the kitchen.

Which worktop did you pick?

The worktop we chose is actually from Wickes' basic kitchen range. We didn't like any of the other worktops and we didn't have the budget for new granite or marble worktops, either, not for a home that won't be our forever home.

But we genuinely liked the least expensive worktop design. However, that came with issues. The ones we had delivered arrived severely damaged, because they weren't made from granite, marble or compressed laminate.

That and our worktops aren't as chunky as conventional worktops, so they were more prone to damages in transit. Although, having said that, Wickes were very good about it and replaced all of our worktops for free and in a timely manner.

Why didn't you choose an upstand?

We decided against a kitchen upstand because we thought it looked a bit old fashioned. Instead, we decided to tile right up to the worktop to make the kitchen as a whole look more open and contemporary. But it's down to individual taste. We just decided not to install an upstand with our worktop.

How did you choose the colour scheme?

We knew we wanted something light and airy, mainly because the back of the house doesn't let much light in. So a colour scheme that was timeless and fresh was what we were aiming for. We spent hours in Wickes looking at different door colours and worktop designs.

It really takes a long time to work out the colour scheme. It wasn't a quick decision by any means. There was a lot of trial and error and a few arguments (haha) involved before we finally settled on a colour scheme that worked for us, even down to the paint on the walls.

What do you keep in the pull-out cabinet?

It can be difficult to decide what you should keep in the pull-out drawer, mainly because they're often used as fillers, like wine racks. We keep loads of things in our pull-out drawer - coffee machine descaler, tin foil, cling film, baking paper, bin bags, sandwich bags, spare sponges etc. Turns out, you can fit quite a lot in that narrow little drawer, so the world's your oyster, really.

Why did you choose brushed chrome handles?

We didn't want knobs because we thought it looked a bit old fashioned, so proper handles were always on the cards, despite being more expensive. But we could have gone for chrome handles, like our light switches and sockets.

But I thought about the amount of buffing up I'd have to do with chrome handles, so we decided on the brushed design instead. It means I clean the handles once a week rather than every day, because almost every cupboard door is opened on a daily basis.

Why did you get rid of the old kitchen?

We got rid of the old kitchen because it was tired, DIY-fitted by someone who clearly didn't know what they were doing and it was just falling apart. It also didn't have any end panels or plinths that fitted. The floor was cold, tiled and dirty. Everything about the old kitchen made my skin crawl, despite looking alright in the pictures. We couldn't wait to rip it all out basically and I'm so glad we did.

What colour did you choose for the walls?

We chose White Mist by Dulux.

Is your laminate floor waterproof?

It's water resistant, meaning spillages must be wiped up within 24 hours of liquids making contact with the floor. We got our laminate flooring from the same place we've got all of our laminate flooring from so far - Quick Step. We decided against tiles because they're cold and need time to set when it comes to laying. Essentially, tiles didn't fit in with our timeline or our tastes overall.

Where did you get your sockets & light switches from?

Our sockets and light switches are from Screwfix, but they're manufactured by British General (BG). You can buy these from multiple places, including B&Q, but we found the best price was Screwfix. We have a dual-control light switch as it also controls the light in the dining room. We also went for two sockets with USB charging ports and two that are just standard double plug sockets. There's also a single plug socket fitted in the dining room, all of which are chrome and from the same manufacturer.
