A Realistic Cleaning Schedule for Busy People

Cleaning the house is a necessary but time-consuming task. When you work full time and have other personal commitments, it can be tough to find the time to dedicate to keeping the house clean and tidy. If I'm struggling to fit in cleaning time, then I assumed a lot of other people would be in the same boat.

So I thought I'd give you a few pointers of my own for people who are just too busy for continuous house cleaning and upkeep. So, here's a realistic cleaning schedule for busy people from someone who knows.

Daily cleaning tasks for busy people

The things that I will always find the time to do everyday, which can be done either when you get up or at the end of the day, are as follows:
  • Make the bed
  • Do the washing up/load up the dishwasher
  • Wipe down kitchen worktops
  • Wipe down the kitchen sink
  • Clean the hob after every use
  • Give the bathroom sink a quick wipe down
  • Generally tidy high-traffic areas

Weekly cleaning tasks for busy people

While it can be difficult to find the time to do most things every day, separating it down into weekly tasks can make cleaning the house seem less daunting. Here are some cleaning tasks to complete weekly as opposed to everyday:
  • Vacuum the floors
  • Mop hard floors
  • Clean the bathroom
  • Wipe down the mirrors
  • Dust off the furniture
  • Change the bed sheets
  • Wipe down fridge shelves and door pockets
  • Empty the rubbish bins

Monthly cleaning tasks for busy people

These tasks you wouldn't do daily or even weekly, mainly because it's not necessary. But again, it helps to break down tasks into different timeframes to keep on top of things. Here are the things you should be doing on a monthly basis, rather than daily or weekly:
  • Clean the washing machine
  • Clean the dishwasher
  • Dust off the blinds/curtains
  • Wipe down the skirting boards
  • Clean the microwave
  • Wipe down the kitchen cupboards (inside and out)

Cleaning tasks for busy people as & when you remember

There are a few things you can do as and when you remember to do them, or if you have the time to do them. These are things I won't do daily, weekly or even monthly, I just do them as and when they need doing. Here are some suggestions:
  • Clean the windows
  • Deep clean the oven
  • Declutter cupboards around the home
  • Properly clean inside the fridge
  • Wash curtains and throws
  • Clean underneath your furniture
