Is the CN Tower Really Worth a Visit?
If you're wanting to visit Toronto, whether it's for the World Cup or just to tick another iconic city off the list, then it's only natural for you to think about going up the CN Tower. That's exactly what we weighed up when we went back in May of this year. So, I'm going to be arming you with some information that might help you to make a decision, answering the question of 'is the CN Tower really worth a visit?".
Reasons why the CN Tower is worth visiting
The CN Tower in Toronto is an iconic sight to behold. It would almost be rude to visit the famous city without at least going to see it. But the really question you're asking is whether it's worth actually going up it. Here are a few reasons why the CN Tower in Toronto is worth a visit.
You get unmatched panoramic views
The sole reason why people go up the CN Tower is the see the amazing views of Toronto that it offers. On clear days, you can enjoy the sweeping city skyline, Lake Ontario (which looks like an ocean) and even areas that extend far beyond Toronto itself. The observation decks provide amazing photo opportunities, making it a must-see for first time visitors to the city.
It's an iconic Canadian landmark
It's a tower that's featured in many films, TV shows and now in the World Cup. It's far beyond being just another tourist attraction. It's become a symbol of Canada that's recognised throughout the entire world. This makes it something that almost all international travellers will simple have to see.
It offers a glass floor experience
You'll be able to walk across a glass floor located on both observation decks. It was installed in 1994 and it allows visitors to look directly down to the ground from the very top of the tower. Walking across the glass floor can be both existing, intimidating and thrilling all at the same time. It helps to make the experience unforgettable.
There's an option to dine with a unique view
There's a restaurant at the top of the CN Tower where diners can sit with a stunning view of the Toronto skyline. The food is incredible, the drinks are exciting and delicious and the views are simply one of a kind. Located at a higher level than the other two tourist observation decks, it makes for a wonderful experience for foodie tourists that want to do something different. Oh, did I mention that the restaurant rotates?! It does a full 360-degree rotation of the city in around an hour, so you'll see every angle of the city during your time there.
Drawbacks of the CN Tower that you should be aware of
As amazing as the CN Tower is, and as much as we absolutely loved every second of our visit, there are some drawbacks to visiting it that you'll need to be aware of before deciding whether or not you want to go there. Let's take a look at some of the drawbacks of visiting the CN Tower:
Tickets, the restaurant & other experiences can be expensive
For us, coming from the UK, the Canadian dollar-British pound conversion rate is very good, but if you're going from other countries, or from within Canada, then the tickets, the restaurant and the other experiences can be costly. The only upside? The restaurant includes a ticket to the observation decks below, but you will need to spend around $75 dollars on a two-course meal per person to get this (correct at the time of writing).
It draws extensive crowds, increasing waiting times in the process
As one of Toronto's, and Canada's, most iconic landmarks, it draws in a lot of people, which is the case with any tourist destination. However, it can increase waiting times during peak periods, so plan ahead and make sure you arrive in plenty of time to allow for a longer-than-planned day.
The weather may affect your experience
This largely depends on the time of year you go, but if the weather is cold, misty, foggy or even raining, then it can hinder your views of the city. On poor weather days, you're less likely to experience the glorious panoramic views of Toronto that could be had on more sunny or clear days. It's just something to keep in mind when you're planning your trip to Toronto, especially during the winter and autumn.
