7 Tips for Visiting a Walt Disney World Water Park

You might think that Walt Disney World is just a few theme parks and a few hotels. However, you'd actually be mistaken. There's a lot more to it than simply being a theme park, which may surprise you.

One of the things you can do that will help to break up the trip and give you a rest from spending all day in the parks is to hit one of the water parks on property. The two water parks include Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon.

You can read about how you can spend the day there in one of my recent blog posts: How to Spend a Day at a Walt Disney World Water Park. But back to this article; no matter which one you choose, here are a few tips for visiting a Walt Disney World water park.

1. Choose one that's right for you

As I've just said, there are two Walt Disney World water parks that you can choose from that are included in your general admission ticket. They are Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon. The thing you need to bear in mind is that both water parks are either open at different times in the year, while the other is closed, or they may be shut for refurbishment.

It's always best to check which one is open and which is closed during your stay. This just avoids disappointment when you get there and have your heart set on visiting one or the other. For me, Typhoon Lagoon is my favourite, but your preferred park might be Blizzard Beach. Just do some research when planning your holiday and you'll be fine!

2. Arrive early in the day

Both water parks can get extremely busy, so the thing we've found, especially if you want a sun bed, is to get there almost as soon as the water park opens. It also means that you'll be able to join queues for some of the main attractions before the wait times increase. It also gives you a chance to enjoy the water park before the hottest part of the day hits.

3. Bring the essentials

You need to make sure that you pack the necessities when visiting any Walt Disney World water park. You should bring waterproof clothing, swimwear, water and bottles, sun cream, a hat, flip flops, sunglasses, a change of clothes, a towel and a plastic bag to put wet clothing or swimwear in when you've packed up for the day.

4. Wear sun cream

This goes without saying, but people think that just because they're going to be in water for much of the day that sun cream isn't needed. It's actually quite the opposite. You need to bring sun cream with you and apply it regularly throughout the day.

Your sun cream might say it's waterproof, but it might not have as much staying power as you think it does. So, no matter what the bottle says, keep topping up your sun cream to be extra safe. If you forget to bring it, you can buy it while you're there, but it will come with a higher price tag, just to warn you.

5. Stay hydrated

Just as you need to keep applying sun cream, you also need to keep drinking water. This helps to prevent heat stroke and will also aid in keeping you cool. The other thing is, you're using a lot of energy by swimming in water, so you need to replenish the moisture your body has lost during exercise. So, bring plenty of water with you or bring a reusable bottle that can be filled up at water stations around the water park.

6. Protect your valuables

You shouldn't be leaving any of your belongings unattended while you're visiting the water parks. You can rent lockers, but I'd still recommend taking off any watches, earrings, necklaces and other jewellery items before you set off to the parks, leaving them in the safe in your hotel room.

When it comes to electronics, such as a phone that you can't leave behind, definitely rent a locker to keep them safe. This is something we do when there's just the two of us and we both want to go on water slides together.

7. Check the weather forecast

If there's the slightest chance of thunder, lightning or stormy conditions, generally, then the water park itself will close or the rides and other attractions will. This is for your safety and the safety of those working there. If you want to go to the water parks, then choose which day to go when you get there as the weather will be better mapped out at that time.
