How to Wake Up Feeling Refreshed

Sleeping is something we all do, mainly because it's a way for us to recharge our batteries after a long, busy day. But sometimes, sleeping on its own isn't enough to make you feel bright eyed and bushy-tailed the next morning. So, what can you do to make sure that you're waking up in the morning feeling as refreshed as possible? Let's take a look.

Keep a consistent sleep schedule

Consistency is key when it comes to having a good nights sleep. Your body has an internal clock, so to speak, that regulates when you feel tired and when you feel awake. As such, getting up and going to bed at the same time every night is a great way of keeping the natural rhythm stable. Go to sleep at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning, even at the weekend, if you want to feel refreshed when you get up.

Have a relaxing bedtime routine

An hour before you go to bed, take the time to wind down as opposed to catching up on emails, playing video games or doing any form of stressful activity. A few things you can do to relax before bed is to have a hot bath or shower, read a book, listen to calming music or do some gentle stretches. If you repeat the same nighttime routine every time, then it can begin to signal to your brain that it's time to go to sleep.

Make your bedroom sleep-friendly

You might not think that your bedroom could be anymore sleep-friendly, as that's exactly what its purpose is. However, it might not be as sleep-friendly as you think. The trick is to keep your room cool, dark and quiet. Comfortable bedding, a supportive mattress and soft lighting can all contribute to making your bedroom feel warm and cosy. Also, if you take your phone to bed with you, charge it on the opposite side of the room and turn notifications off after a certain time.

Avoid caffeine & alcohol

This one goes without saying, really. But caffeine and alcohol can hinder how well you sleep at night. You might think that a night cap is something that helps you sleep, but it can actually make your cycle more disturbed.

Caffeine, on the other hand, can remain active in your body for hours on end, which can negatively impact your sleep for the night. Basically, the best thing you can do here is avoid them both. Our rule is no caffeine after 4pm and we don't drink alcohol right before going to bed, either.

Move your body throughout the day

Regular exercise can support a better night's sleep. It can give you more energy throughout the day but ready to sleep and rest at night. You don't have to do anything strenuous. Just a walk around the neighbourhood or some simple stretching exercises will do the trick, just don't do anything too vigorous right before bedtime.
