Things I Want to Make Time for This Summer

At the start of this year, I don't think anyone expected a pandemic to occur. We'd probably all made summer plans only to gradually watch them disappear as the months went on. But while we await safer times, I still think it's important to make time for things this summer, despite not being able to go to festivals or have the sunny holiday you were so looking forward to. Summer time is a little different for those like me, who have a full time job, as you don't have weeks and weeks off to enjoy the sunshine, but that doesn't mean to say that you can't still take the weekends to do summer activities.

As I'm writing this, I don't yet know what plans are in place to ease lockdown restrictions. I don't know if we'll be allowed to slowly see people outside of our household, I don't know if we'll be able to go back to work (with social distancing measures in place), I don't know if we'll be able to take more exercise a day, I don't know when non-essential shops will be allowed to open...I don't now anything at this point in time, so this list will be based on what I can do safely and socially distanced from others.

When I planned this in at the start of the year, I had wanted to include exciting things that I wanted to make time for this summer. But as I've already said, no one knew that this would happen or this extent, really. I'll likely do another one of these when things start to go back to "normal", whatever that "normal" may be. In the meantime, lets delve into what I'd like to make time during a summer in lockdown (or with slightly eased restrictions in place).

Reading

Lockdown has given me the time I needed to whip out and get through a good few books! I've been particularly loving non-fiction recently as opposed to more conventional fiction that others seem to be really loving. My book of choice currently is Trevor McDonald's autobiography that I got for my birthday (because I bloomin' LOVE Trevor!), but I have a few other non-fiction books lined up to read next so watch this space. However, despite my love for the world on non-fic, I'm also looking forward to spending some time reading fiction because I miss it quite a lot.

Having a barbecue

I love having a barbecue as much as the next British person, and I feel like it's only justified in the summertime. Although we might not be able to this summer, I just love inviting everyone round, having an abundance of food at the ready, a lovely collection of refreshing drinks, a fun summery playlist on and perhaps even playing with some water guns or splashing around in a paddling pool, particularly when it's boiling hot outside! Although I'd absolutely love to have people round to enjoy the fun, it's just something which we'll have to experience on our own this year - it's such a shame, but perhaps we'll be able to make up for it next year.

Taking more photos

I'm not one for taking loads of pictures whenever I go out anywhere, which is surprising considering I have a blog, but I struggle to remember to take photos particularly if I'm in the moment and just enjoying something as it happens. But then I look back and think 'I wish I'd have documented that more'. Despite not being able to experience a normal summer this year, it would be interesting to document this time to look back on in the future. Whether it be chilling in the garden with my sister or going for a run with my brother, I'm looking forward to capturing those moments that would otherwise be forgotten in years to come. Then, I'll have them printed and slot them into my photo album...yes I have a photo album, haha!

Eating more meals outside in the sunshine

I'm not really one to spend hours out in the sun. I hate being too hot, but then I also don't like to miss out on the brilliant weather. I find that the time it takes me to eat a meal is about as long as I'm willing to sit in the searing heat, so eating meals outside with the family seemed like a good alternative to spending copious amounts of time outside with the sun beating down on me, so everyone is happy! It also means I get enough vitamin D whilst also taking some time out of the day to make the most of the fresh, warm air that summer brings. Whether I'm eating breakfast, dinner or simply having a coffee, I'll be way more inclined to consume those things outside.
