7 Things You Must Do During Your First Trip to Walt Disney World

When you go to Walt Disney World for the first time, it can be a very over whelming experience, especially if you’re Disney-mad like I am. But because you’re so excited, it can be easy to miss out some of the most iconic things to do at Disney World. We almost forgot to do a few of those things ourselves when we went. That’s why I thought I’d make somewhat of a checklist for those who are off to Disney World for the first time - enjoy!

Meet Mickey Mouse

Of course, you can’t go to any Disney park without meeting the big man himself. There are loads of places throughout all four parks in Disney World where you can meet Mickey Mouse. The times to see them are so regular that it’s almost impossible to go to Disney World without meeting him, so make sure you pop it on your to-do list!

Watch the Magic Kingdom firework show

The fireworks at Disney World are world-renowned for being spectacular. The show itself is incredible and it’s most certainly a must-watch for anyone going there for the first time. Even if you’ve been before, the firework show never gets old or boring. We actually watched it three or four times throughout our visit and I’d watch it again in a heartbeat given the chance.

Go on Toy Story Mania

Even if you aren’t the biggest fan of Toy Story, you need to go on Toy Story Mania at Hollywood Studios. It’s so much fun and the queue is amazing, believe it or not. It’s as though you’re lining up in and around Andy’s bedroom and there’s also a huge Mr Potato Head who moves and talks to you as you move around the railings.

The ride itself is interactive and slightly competitive so you’re put up against your fellow riders in a fight to score the most points. You essentially have to fire a virtual ball at different targets on different screens. Each target is worth a certain number of points so it’s easy to start accumulating an insane amount of points. It’s an amazing ride that I think everyone needs to experience.

Experience the Dumbo attraction

There are actually two Dumbo rides at Walt Disney World. One is the original ride from when the park first opened in 1971 and the other is far newer. However, no one really knows which one is the original and which is the new one.

To make sure you know you’ve ridden the authentic ride, I’d recommend getting on both of them - one of them will be the original! Anyway, people love the ride simply because it’s an original ride. It might look and seem childish but it’s really not. Give it a chance, you won’t regret it :)

Ride the monorail

You can’t really go to Disney World without riding the monorail at least once. You can get the monorail from Magic Kingdom to EPCOT and vice-a-versa but you can also get it from the Magic Kingdom car park to Magic Kingdom itself. There is an alternative mode of transport to Magic Kingdom by way of a ferry and although that’s a fun way of getting there, with stellar views of the Floridian hotel, it’s far slower than the classic monorail.

The monorail is also an original feature of the park, made to look as it did the day the gates opened. It’s incredibly popular and, if you stay in a Disney Resort hotel, you’ll be able to get a dedicated monorail that takes you right to the doors of your hotel.

Get wet on Splash Mountain

Splash Mountain has been around since the early nineties and is, again, a classic ride at Disney World. Based on a controversial Disney Movie from decades ago (Song of the South), it’s actually become a much-loved favourite among Disney World fans.

However, it’s recently had the go-ahead to be converted from being based around Br’er Rabbit and his other Br’er friends into Princess and the Frog. Where the ride is likely to be the same logistically, the theming and design that sits around you will be very much different if you end up going from 2024.

Either way, you need to go on this iconic ride. Not only is it one of the best log flumes I have ever been on, but it helps to cool you off on a hot Floridian day. It’s also very much considered to be a thrill ride, with a 52.5 feet drop at the end. That’s enough to satisfy any adrenaline junkie!

Eat something Mickey-shaped

When going to any Disney park, it’s almost impossible to eat something that isn’t shaped like Mickey Mouse or his famous pair of ears. Either way, you need to make sure you go out of your way to choose the fun-themed food. I swear it tastes better because it’s Mickey Mouse shaped, haha. Whether it be a Mickey pretzel, a cinnamon roll, an ice cream sandwich or a toffee apple, you’ll enjoy every bite- promise!
