7 Things That Are Dating Your Home

There are always things in our home that we would like to change. But some aspects of it might be far more pressing than others. There were so many things throughout our home when we first moved in that just needed to go, but there were also some dated features that we came across on our renovation travels that I thought were so old-fashioned, I just had to share them with you. Don't get me wrong, our house is in no way perfect and there's still a lot that we want to do to it, but we've got rid of much of the following list. So here are seven things that are dating your home, more so than you might have otherwise realised.

1. A popcorn ceiling

A popular trend throughout the 50's that followed right through to the 80's and 90's, a popcorn ceiling isn't exactly on trend anymore. Popcorn ceilings were used as a cost-effective quick and easy way of covering up imperfections in the original ceiling as well as it being believed that it was better at absorbing sound.

It can be difficult to get rid of, however. Many homeowners resort to having the ceiling ripping out and skimmed professionally to get beautifully flat ceilings again. It's an expensive improvement to make, but it's most definitely worthwhile if you have popcorn ceilings throughout your home.

2. Mirrored wardrobes

We have mirrored wardrobes in our bedroom, which we're yet to "decorate" (I put that in quotes because it will definitely need ripping out and starting again, including skirting boards, architraves, the flooring and we do need some of the ceiling chopping out), but I absolutely HATE the wardrobes. Because we have sloped ceilings upstairs, they were retrofitted haphazardly.

The previous owners had sawn the backs off, so everything in there gets incredibly dusty and it looks awful. I cannot wait to rip those things out and build our own. One thing I detest about them is the fact they're mirrored, and they span the entire room.

We're looking to remove those dated wardrobes and build some that are built-into the sloped ceiling. Not only will this maximise space, but we can also put some matching doors on and make the most of all of the available space beyond that. I'm not planning on putting any floor-length mirrors up after that, haha.

3. White appliances

Growing up throughout the 90's and early 00's, all I remember is my parents and grandparents having white appliances: a white fridge, a white freezer, a white washing machine, a white dishwasher, a white tumble dryer - white EVERYTHING. I do, however, remember a time when we had a brown fridge and a brown tumble dryer, but for the most part, everything was white and basic-looking.

I even remember my parents having a white free-standing cooker. It's definitely something that we've moved away from in the 2020's. Our washing machine is chrome, our dishwasher is chrome, our cooker is grey and our fridge/freezer is black.

I'm not planning on purchasing white appliances anytime soon, and you should think about replacing your white appliances, only once they've been run into the ground. If you're wanting to upgrade your appliances, despite them working well right now, you could always sell them onto someone else for a great price and then put that money towards your new, modern appliance.

4. Wallpaper borders

Using a small roll of wallpaper to edge a room is definitely not something that's on-trend anymore. They're also no longer needed. Borders are great if you're wanting to add some texture or depth to a room, but you can do this in other ways using furniture or you could make a bigger statement and wallpaper and entire wall instead.

5. Magnolia-coloured walls

Refrain from painting your walls the go-to magnolia colour. It's most definitely screams 80's and 90's home decor trends. If you've moved into a home that is entirely magnolia, then please paint over it in a more modern, on-trend colour. If you want a more neutral tone, then choose cool greys or a Scandi white, but never use magnolia!

6. Word art

I know what came into your head; but no, I don't mean on Microsoft Word! Word art refers to frames and prints that are up around the house that read things like "live, laugh, love" or "home" or "love" etc. Generic prints and plaques lack imagination and they just look dated and tacky. Take your time when choosing artwork to go up around your house. Pick something that fits with the room and mirrors your personality instead of choosing any old thing that millions of other people will have throughout their home.

7. Vertical blinds

When we moved into our house, the windows were adorned with vertical blinds. The day we got the keys to the place, we ripped them all out. We decided it was far better to have no window dressings than have to look at,and use, dirty, flimsy, dated vertical blinds.

When I say they were dirty, they really were filthy and they were the worst quality. I took great satisfaction in ripping it off and throwing it in the tip. They lacked style and character and the plastic strips and trims gave school or hospital vibes and I just hated them.

We toyed with the idea of Roman blinds for a while, but our downstairs window is so big that it would have been incredibly expensive as we'd have to have them made. We went for curtains instead and I love them - much more modern and cosy than those pathetic vertical blinds the previous owners had up.
