The Best True Crime Podcasts
Over the past month or so, I have been obsessed with true crime podcasts. I find true crime documentaries incredibly interesting, so I set out on a quest to download some podcasts of the same nature. They make my bus journey to work a lot less boring, almost like listening to an audio book.
If, like me, you also like to watch crime docs, but haven't actually thought about the podcasts that are out there that you can listen to instead, then here a few that I have been thoroughly enjoying. All three of them are highly captivating, making it difficult to cease listening. I've even been listening to these in the shower or pottering around the house, just so I can get a few more episode in...sad, I know.
Here's a small collection of true crime podcasts that you need to download NOW!
Sword & Scale
Sword and Scale is slightly different to the next two podcasts in the sense that each and every episode examines a different case. From drug crimes and bank heists to fraud and murder, you'll always be kept on your toes with this true crime series.
Featuring witness testimonies, 911 recorded calls, trial audio, interrogation tapes and much more, these thoroughly authentic, well-researched, heart-stopping stories will have you listening right to the very spine-tingling end. With around 140 episodes available for download right now, you won't be short for non-fictitious stories of heartache, deceit and betrayals.
Someone Knows Something
I'll be honest here, out of the three this is my favourite, but also the most frustrating true crime podcast. It's an absolutely brilliant series, focusing on the cases of missing people whose bodies/murderers have never been found. A lot of the time, their fate is unknown, too. That is the frustrating part to this podcast. But that aside, regular updates are posted regarding each case, so you're always kept in the loop.
Produced by CBC radio, this podcast is created, written and produced by Canadian award-winning writer and filmmaker, David Ridgen. He sets out examining five different missing persons cases, spanning over five different seasons. He thoroughly investigates each one, probably more so than the actual police force, providing a thought-provoking perspective on each case. It gets you thinking like a detective, which can make listening a little frustrating. The more information you hear, the more annoying it gets, as you're constantly thinking 'why haven't the police looked into that?' or 'how could the police ignore that?' or 'why hasn't this guy been arrested yet?'.
Yes, there's an answer for each and every one of those internal questions from the perspective of the law, but the whole point of the podcast is...someone knows something. Someone who's involved, perhaps someone Ridgen has personally interviewed, knows something that could solve a case.
With a blog to go along side the series, providing pictures of the missing people and those Ridgen has interviewed, it's quite an immersive listening experience, making it one of the most interesting podcasts I have ever listened to. Granted, it isn't for the faint of heart, so be prepared to hear some disturbing content.
In the Dark
This is a true crime podcast involving investigative journalism to examine the case of Jacob Wetterling, a little boy who was kidnapped and murdered in the late 80s, and alleged killer Curtis Flowers (no connection between the two). The first season looks extensively into the Wetterling disappearance, providing spine-chilling testimonies of what happened on the night Jacob went missing. Season 2, having no real connection to the first season, looks into the trial of Curtis Flowers, a man whose been accused of shooting four people dead in 1996.
With investigative journalism offering a unique perspective on both cases, it will eventually become hard for you not to constantly think about both cases, thinking up theories and trying to put pieces together to try and solve the case...even though you know you never will. This is one of the first true crime podcasts I downloaded and I was not left disappointed.
