Afternoon Tea for Two at the Pudding Pantry
Over the August Bank Holiday weekend, my mum and I went for afternoon tea at the Pudding Pantry. It was a Sunday and the temperature outside had surpassed 30 degrees Celsius, which for England, is pretty bloody hot! We decided to sit indoors to escape the searing hot for a while.
The setting inside was perfect, set out to make me feel like I was sat in the dining room of a traditional country home. The tables were made of solid wood and the white and blue chairs perfectly complemented the decor!
We were sat in the corner by a long, floor-to-ceiling window, but we were kept out of the sun's glare, something we were grateful for. The afternoon tea is put on most days between 2-5pm, so we chose the 2:30pm slot, as this also allowed us to potter around and do other things as well as this on a sunny Sunday afternoon over a Bank Holiday weekend.
When we were taken to our table (which was already laid out, complete with a crisp white tablecloth), we immediately chose which tea we would like. My mum went for Oolong while I went for a classic Earl Grey. We each had our own teapot, which easily gave us around four cups, something I was impressed with as you usually get a tiny teapot with a single bag in it.
We weren't waiting long before our teas came, and before we knew it, someone came skipping over with our stand full of food. Traditionally, the sandwiches are on the bottom tier, scones are placed in the middle and mini desserts are laid out on the top.
Our sandwiches consisted of ham salad, feta with a mixture of other things and smoked salmon on a bed on garlic and herb cream cheese spread out over toasted sourdough bread. The middle tier has four mini scones with sweet strawberry jam and fresh clotted cream laid upon it. The desserts on the top tier included peanut brittle, biscuits, Oreo fudge, coconut macaroons and two Victoria sponge cupcakes garnished with a mini jammy dodger each.
The whole thing was absolutely delicious, even down the tea we were served. We couldn't finish everything and ended up bringing the puddings home in a small box (which we made our mission to get in the fridge as soon as possible so they wouldn't get ruined in the blistering heat). When we reported our experience back to the family, they all sounded very impressed. So much so, my sister now wants to go there to celebrate her birthday in November, so we may get her a voucher for afternoon tea for two!
