Things You Do NOT Need to Bring to University

Going to university is one of the scariest, but also one of the best things you'll ever do. But seeing as you've never done it before, it can be difficult to know what to bring with you. You're never sure if you're going to need something but nine times out of ten, you probably won't actually need the thing you're torn between bringing or leaving at home. So what DON'T you need to bring to uni? Let me tell you!

Luxury white goods

You don't need to bring things like a washing machine or a fridge or anything at all like that. Whether you're staying in halls or a house, that sort of stuff is usually provided for you. You might have to buy small things like kettles and toasters but don't bring any more than you need.

That means leaving your Nespresso machine at home together with your soda stream, haha. These appliances aren't needed and you'll find you can live without them. Save space in the boot of the car and on your kitchen counters and leave them at home.

Excessive amounts of stationery

Don't bring anything you don't actually need - this will be a theme throughout this article. Bringing more than enough stationery will only clutter up the place and take up space in draws and on desks, where space is essential. Leave all your different coloured Sharpies at home and only bring a few pens, maybe a couple of pencils, notebooks and anything else your course requires, like a calculator, for example.

Your entire wardrobe

When I went to university, I brought my autumn/winter stuff with me when I left home. As the spring came, I went back home and swapped my autumn/winter clothes out for spring/summer clothing. You don't need to bring every piece of clothing you have in your wardrobe, mainly because you just won't have the room for it in your halls or in a house share. Only bring the clothes that are needed that season and leave the rest at home.

Lots of books

Text books might seem like a good idea, but don't bring loads and loads of them. Only bring the ones your course specifies and even then, you might be able to get them in the university library. If you like reading for pleasure, I'd recommend investing in a Kindle or downloading some books on an iPad to save room. You don't get given a lot of space to house books when you live out at uni, so bring as few as possible.

Old notes & books from school

You don't need to bring any notes from your A Levels or college, even if you're doing the same or similar subject at uni. It's just not relevant and you won't talk about any of it at university. I got rid of all my A Level notes when I went to uni so take the opportunity to have a clear out of some of your old work. Save space and get rid of your old school work because you just won't need it.

A printer

You don't need to bring a printer to university because the uni itself will have several dotted around the place. You'll have a printing allowance, but it'll be enough to get all of your work printed off, especially in this day and age when assignments are now handed in digitally. When I went to uni, I had to print off physical copies. Don't waste money on a personal printer because you just won't use it.

Your car

Leave the car at home or sell it for some extra cash. Use your legs or public transport to get around. I walked absolutely everywhere when I lived in at university. I didn't catch a bus once and, if I wanted to go home, I caught the train back. I wasn't bothered about having a car. in fact, I hadn't even passed my driving test at that point because I was so uninterested in driving - there was no need for it.
