7 Tips for Shampooing Your Hair Like a Pro

You might think that shampooing your hair is a simple and straightforward task. It's something we've been doing for generations, and quite successfully, or so you thought. What if I told you that there is actually a right way to wash your hair? It's true, and it's the way the pros do it.

Ever noticed that your hair always feels so much better after a cut and blow dry than it does after you've had a shower at home? Well I'm on hand to help you to shampoo your hair like the pros, giving you the results that you crave after visiting the hair dressers.

But be sure to note that much of it hinges on the shampoo you choose and the subsequent hair products you use after that, like conditioner, hair masks and even hair serums. Do your research when it comes to hair products to use after shampooing for the best possible results.

1. Thoroughly wet your hair, from the roots to the ends

You need to make sure that you're thoroughly wetting your hair with lukewarm water. Soak it right down to the roots and through to the ends for the best results. Using lukewarm water is crucial for this, because hot water makes the hair weaker and cold water shuts off the cuticles in your scalp, meaning the shampoo won't be able to get right to the roots, leading to you getting greasy hair more quickly. In fact, you should follow the whole process through using lukewarm water for the best results and for the healthiest hair and cleanest scalp.

2. Keep the hair drenched when you apply the shampoo

You might think that it's better to remove excess moisture from the hair before applying product, because that's what we're taught about applying conditioner. Shampoo, however, is a whole other story. You hair needs to be soaking wet when you apply the shampoo.

The water in the hair will ensure the shampoo lathers properly which, in turn, means you're using less shampoo on the whole. Using too much shampoo can cause the hair to become claggy, heavy and greasy, even though you've just washed it.

3. Use just the right amount of shampoo for your hair

We've just touched on this, but you should always make sure that you're using the right amount of shampoo for your hair. If you're not using enough, then your hair won't be as clean and if you use too much, it can make the hair look and feel greasy from the offset. You need to work out the exact amount of shampoo that works for you. If it's not enough, then you can always top up the amount you use gradually, but never use too much if you can help it.

4. Pay particular attention to the scalp rather than the ends

The scalp is where the oils are secreted. It's also where airflow is lacking, so you'll notice that this is the area that gets dirty. It's made up of an accumulation of hair products, oils and even dirt, depending on where you've been or the activities you've been doing and how long it's been since you last washed your hair. for example, if you've been to the gym, then you'll need to wash your hair as sweat would have accumulated there, along with other things.

This is the sole reason as to why you need to apply the shampoo to the scalp. Squirt the product into your hand and lather it up slightly in your hands between applying to the head. Focus on the scalp alone, using your finger tips to massage the product right into the cuticles, with lukewarm water, don't forget. You should then use the excess to run through to your ends. This also helps to prevent the over-use of shampoo.

5. Firmly massage the scalp with your finger tips

When it comes to applying the shampoo directly to the scalp, you shouldn't rub it in too vigorously. You need to be gentle, despite making sure you're firm. To avoid damaging the hair cuticles or grazing the scalp, only use your finger tips to massage the shampoo into the cuticles, rather than your nails or knuckles, for example.

6.Shampoo twice for exceptionally clean hair

If you want to have the cleanest of hair, then shampooing it twice is the way forward. This is something you might want to do after going to the gym or if you've spent all day in the garden or on a windy walk. It's not something you need to do every time you wash your hair, it just depends on how soiled it has become since its last wash.

Shampoo it properly as I've outlined, and rinse the shampoo out afterwards. But before you start applying the conditioner or hair mask, you should take a small amount of additional shampoo and use it on the scalp only. It just makes doubly-sure that your cuticles are as clean as they can be, especially if you've done something that generates excess dirt and oil in the hair.

7. Rinse well to wash the shampoo away

You need to make sure that you're washing your shampoo out properly. This is because any leftover shampoo can make the hair feel heavy and greasy - the very opposite of what you're trying to achieve. It can also lead to drop-out of a white powder, which isn't dandruff, but shampoo residue that has dried out. Rinse it out properly, letting water run through it until all of the bubbles have disappeared and nothing but still, clear water runs off the ends.
