43 Essential Tasks That Will Keep Your Garden Tidy All Year Round
Gardening can seem like a laborious task, especially when it comes to this time of year. Although it's the time for everything to grow back, with new growth comes maintenance. However, I'm not just sticking to spring gardening jobs in this blog post. Instead, I'm going to take you through some of the most important gardening jobs you should do throughout the course of the year to keep your garden neat and tidy all the time. So let's get into it!
January - February
- Plant bare-root roses, shrubs and hedges
- Clear away soggy perennials
- Get rid of plants that have collapsed over winter
- Clear fallen leaves once again, as they may have fallen during stormy weather
- Deadhead winter bedding plants and flowers, like chrysanthemums
- Move dormant plants elsewhere, especially if they need shelter and protection from the cold
March - April
- Dead-head daffodils and other spring flowering bulbs, don't let them die down naturally
- Feed all of your ericaceous shrubs and flowers, like azaleas, hydrangeas and rhododendrons
- Sort out your borders, removing established weeds before they spread or become prolific
- Feed other plants with generic plant food to give them a boost at the start of the season
- Clean out your water butt and put back in place, ready for April showers
May - June
- Prune back hydrangeas
- Divide your hardy perennials
- Check for pests and treat your plants accordingly
- Plant our dahlia tubers
- Prune spring-flowering plants, shrubs and bushes
- Tie in shoots of climbing plants
- Remove faded spring bedding plants and replace with summer ones
- Check for pests under leaves
- Support tall perennials
- Feed container and hanging plants with general plant food
July - August
- Keep soil raked over to keep weeds at bay
- Water plants and flowers regularly
- Keep dead-heading your bedding plants so that they keep flowering
- Make sure your hydrangeas and camellias are well-watered, if nothing else
- Strim or mow wild flower meadows
- Start to plant autumnal bulbs
- Keep bird baths topped up
September - October
- Sow annual seeds
- Collect ripe seeds from your favourite plants and place in an envelope so they can dry out
- Fill gaps in boarders with late-flowering plants
- Keep dead-heading plants until the frost sets in
- Raise up plant pots so they don't become water-logged
- Plant-up autumn bedding
- Compost spent summer bedding plants
- Plant your spring bulbs
- Sweep up any leaves that have fallen into your garden
- Give your lawn one last mow before winter
November - December
- Tip out containers that once held summer flowering annuals
- Clean out the containers ready for the next year
- Top up bird baths
- Clean and sharpen tools ready for next year
- Repair any fences and re-paint anything that needs it, while you can see
