6 Reasons Why You Should Visit Edinburgh at Christmas
About a year ago, Tom and I visited Edinburgh at Christmastime (take a look at the article I wrote all about our time there, including some photos, here, if you're interested) and it was absolutely, hands down, my favourite Christmas break we've taken to date. I loved it so much that I wanted to write this blog post, persuading you to visit the magnificent city at Christmas over any other time of year. If you don't, then you're seriously missing out. So why should you take my advice and visit Edinburgh over other cities this Christmas? Let me tell you...
1. You'll get to experience the beautiful architecture
Edinburgh is an extremely beautiful city. The buildings and surroundings are incredibly old and the architecture is absolutely stunning. It puts places like Oxford and London through their paces, although I think that Edinburgh holds the top spot for the most beautiful city I've visited in the UK so far.
I could have spend many hours walking the streets, across cobbled streets and down quaint narrow lanes adorned with beautiful shop fronts. It's the most magical city in the world to visit at Christmas time, in my opinion.
2. There's the chance to visit the Edinburgh Christmas market
The Edinburgh Christmas market is comparable to the Hyde Park Christmas market in London, only the one in Edinburgh is far more quaint and traditional. It has a more festive, community spirit about it that you just don't get with other Christmas markets, anywhere else in the world.
It comes with all of the stalls you could imagine, as well as fairground rides and a spot of ice skating. Don't miss Edinburgh Christmas Market off your list this festive season if you're wanting something sweet and traditional.
3. Edinburgh Castle offers incredible views
While Edinburgh Castle offers exceptional views all year round, it delivers something extra special at Christmas time. You get to experience all of the sights, sounds and smells of Edinburgh at Christmas from an impressive height. You won't get views like that at any other time of year from Edinburgh Castle, so why not visit Edinburgh at Christmas over other times of year?
4. Witness the Edinburgh Christmas tree for yourself
Every year, Edinburgh put up a magnificent, beautiful Christmas tree, adorned with all of the lights you could imagine. You can't really miss it when you head to the centre of the city, towards the Christmas market. As a stunning symbol of the city's festive spirit, it's worth heading all that way to feast your eyes on it.
5. Enjoy a famous Hot Toddy
A Hot Toddy is essentially a hot whiskey, so where better to try one than in Scotland? While they might be available all year round, you're almost guaranteed to come across one at Christmas time, with most establishments and Christmas market stalls offering the beverage.
It's a great alternative to traditional mulled wine, while being a classic Scottish beverage to warm your bones through on a cold festive evening. If you go to Edinburgh at Christmas and don't get a Hot Toddy, then you've missed a unique opportunity, in my opinion.
6. Get a taste of Scottish traditions
Scottish traditions are like no other, with celebrations surrounding, not only Christmas, but "Hogmanay" as well. It's a Scottish New Year celebration that involves engaging and participating in numerous Scottish traditions and events with people in the local community. It's a wonderful sight to see and it's something you can only experience in Scotland at this time of year.
