What is a Toner & Why Do You Need One?

Toners - it's been long-debated about whether or not they're actually needed as a part of your skincare routine. But in order for you to understand how important a toner actually is to your skincare routine, you first need to know what it is and what it can do for your skin. So what is it and why do you need to keep it as part of your skincare regime? Let's explore it further.

What is a toner?

Toners are a liquid skincare produce that is designed to balance the pH level on the skin. It also aims to remove impurities that are left on the skin after it has been cleansed. As such, a toner needs to be applied after cleanser, despite it being used to remove excess dirt, oil and makeup from the skin.

This is because those things can be left behind after the cleansing process. A toner can be used daily or twice-daily as part of your regular skincare routine. Another main benefit of using a toner is that it helps to keep the skin hydrated and moisturised, even before a moisturiser is applied. So that's what a toner is and what it does, but is it really needed as part of our skincare routine?

Why do I need a toner as part of my skincare routine?

Despite toner offering all of those benefits when it comes to skincare, it's not actually needed as part of your skincare routine. It's something that many people use as a way of double-cleansing, without actually using another round of cleanser.

Most often, cleanser is more costly than toner, hence why some people like to use toner after their cleansing routine. So, in short, toner isn't a necessary part of a skincare routine, but it does add an extra flourish of love and care for your skin. Don't feel as though you shouldn't use it just because it's not a necessary step. I love using a toner!

Why do I use a toner & which one am I using?

I like to use a toner as part of my skincare routine, mainly because the toner leaves my skin feeling silky and smooth, as opposed to a bit dry and tight, which is how my skin can feel after I cleanse my skin. I feel as though the toner I use adds a little something extra that I don't get with any other skincare product.

But which one do I use? As you can probably tell by the header photo, I love the Vitamin E toner from The Body Shop. It smells divine, it's easy to apply and a little bit really does go a long way. I also love the way it makes my skin feel, even before applying moisturiser.

I totally recommend using a toner, particularly this one. Even though it's not a necessary step in my skincare routine, I will continue to keep using it as I really notice a difference in how it makes my skin look and feel.
